Waratahs vs Reds Predictions

The Reds have won all four of their matches in Super Rugby AU 2021, while the Waratahs have lost all of their matches and sit with a -108 points difference. The -16 handicap looks very generous, so I’m backing the Reds to cover it with ease.

  • Waratahs have lost 3 of their last 4 matches by 19, 34 and 51 points.
  • Waratahs have a -108 points difference in their last 4 matches.
  • Waratahs average 12 points per game in Super Rugby AU.
  • Reds beat the Waratahs 41-7 in their last match.
  • Reds’ Filipo Daugunu scored 2 tries in his last match against the Waratahs.
  • Reds' Filipo Daugunu was the top try scorer (6) in 2020 Super Rugby AU.
  • Reds have won their last 4 matches.

Head to Head

Reds have won two of their last three meetings with the Waratahs.

Their last match was on the opening weekend of 2021 Super Rugby AU where the Reds won 41-7 at home.

Waratahs Form

The Waratahs are bottom of the Super Rugby AU table with only one point from their four matches. They have been well off the required standard thus far this season.

The Tahs’ lost 41-7 on the opening weekend to the Reds before being annihilated 61-10 by the Brumbies in round two.  There was an improvement in the third round against the Western Force but the Waratahs still lost 20-16.

After a bye the Waratahs returned to action last week where they lost 33-14 to the Rebels. This week sees the second round of the competition and the Waratahs will want to avoid another humiliation against the Reds.

Waratahs Injuries & Team News

Mark Nawaqanitawase shifts to the bench this week with Jack Maddocks returning to fullback. Alex Newsome shifts from outside centre to right wing as Lalakai Foketi takes the number 13 jersey.

Sam Wykes comes in at lock while William Harris makes start in the loose trio in place of Jack Dempsey.

Reds Form

The Reds sit top of the Super Rugby table with four wins from their four matches. After losing last season’s Super Rugby AU final, the Reds will be keen to keep their momentum in the second half of the campaign.

The Queensland-based outfit beat the Waratahs 41-7 on the opening weekend of the 2021 season. They were completely dominant in that fixture and much the same is expected this time around.

The Reds then achieved two very narrow wins in a row. First they beat the Rebels 23-21 and then upset the odds with a 40-38 win in Canberra against the Brumbies.

Last week the Reds beat the Western Force 26-19 at home. It was a tightly contested match but the Reds were good value for the win.

Reds Injuries & Team News

The only change to the Reds backline sees Iiaisa Droasese drop out of the team to accommodate try-scoring machine, Filipo Daugunu.

Among the forwards the Reds have changed things up a bit. Alex Mafi makes way for Brandon Paenga-Amosa at hooker and Ryan Smith comes in at lock to replace Angus Blyth.

Seru Uru will start at the back of the scrum in place of Harry Wilson who moves onto the bench.

Verdict

The Reds are unbeaten in 2021 and look very strong. They destroyed the Waratahs 41-7 in their clash earlier this season. I'm tipping the Reds to cover the -16 handicap with relative ease.

Reds wing Filipo Daugunu scored a brace the last time these sides met. He is tipped to score twice again and be the first try scorer of the clash.
