The July Festival reaches its climax at Newmarket on Saturday with the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup, one of the most important sprint races of the British flat-racing season. Run over six furlongs on the July Course, the Group 1 contest brings together established older sprinters, progressive three-year-olds and international challengers in a race that often helps define the sprinting pecking order for the rest of the season.

Venetian Sun tops the odds

Venetian Sun heads the market and brings powerful three-year-old form into the race. A winner over both five and six furlongs, she confirmed herself as a high-class sprinter with victory in the Commonwealth Cup and now has the chance to test that form against older horses.

Satono Reve is a major danger and gives the race a strong international flavour. The Japanese runner has already proved himself at Group 1 level and was only narrowly denied in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, making him a serious contender if reproducing that level.

Almeraq also commands respect after landing the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he got the better of Satono Reve in a tight finish. That form makes him one of the key players, although confirming it will be no easy task.

Mission Central adds further intrigue for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. He was impressive in winning the King Charles III Stakes over five furlongs at Royal Ascot and should not be inconvenienced by the return to six furlongs.

With Big Mojo, Double Rush and Division also holding claims, this looks a deep and high-quality renewal. The central question is whether Venetian Sun can confirm herself as the rising sprint star, or whether the older international sprinters will prove too tough.
