Best Bet of the Day - Turffontein

Race 2 – Up And Up (7)

Jockey: Philasande Mxoli
Trainer: Paul Matchett
Up And Up put up a great late burst over the last 400m to overtake the winner in just her third career run… but she was overtaken by an even stronger finisher in Moana River and had to be content with second place. It was the 3-yr-old bay filly’s second second-place finish in three runs and her late pace gives me confidence in her for this race.

Up And Up has no major contenders in the race as there are no recent race winners to contend with, although Me And You (3.00) placed second in her most recent race, which was the second of her career following a 58-day break after her ninth-place debut back in May. Empress of Peace is also slated in at 3.00 after runs of 5-3-9-3-2 coming into this race, but I still fancy Up And Up for her late burst of pace.

Race 4 – Delaware River (7)

Jockey: Philasande Mxoli
Trainer: Stuart Pettigrew
This looks like a tight race with a couple of recent winners lining up in the gate. Can’t Catch Me (10.00) picked up her fourth career win after five finishes of seven or below on the trot.

Bold Action is at 6.00 after placing 2-2-4-2 in four of her last five runs, but she has placed six or below in eight of her last 12 races so there’s an inconsistency that has me bothered. Pretty Analia (11.00) has two wins in five but is also inconsistent, while Kortvandraad (5.00) is a good option on the back of finishes of 5-5-1-3-2-5 coming into this meet.

Delaware River remains my pick, though, as the 4-yr-old bay filly has five Top 3 finishes in 13 starts and has run 4-4-3-2-2-1–5-6-3 in her last nine runs. Her last run was a disappointing third place, but she did well to make up plenty of ground after a slow start thanks to a storming finish.

Race 6 – Euphrates (4)

Jockey: G Lerena
Trainer: Tony Peter
No recent winners in this 11-horse field with only Full Go (15.00), Chabal (6.00) DJ Junior (8.00) and Deception Pass (8.00) having second-place finishes in their last six runs. Euphrates finished last in a three-horse field just 10 days ago, but he had a good burst towards the end and the run might have loosened him up for his second career win.

The 5-yr-old chestnut gelding has been consistent over the last year, running 4-5-3-4-4-1-3-3-3-11-5-5-3, so while he’s by no means the runaway favourite I can see enough promise to back him for the win.

Race 8 – Winter In Auckland (3)

Jockey: Kaidan Brewer
Trainer: Tony Peter
Race day ends with a strong 12-horse field featuring five recent winners, although there is a big pack that is likely to lag way behind the winners. Brigitte Anne (4.50) is a strong contender on the back of runs of 3-4-4-2-3-1, with Trip of Faith (4.50) and Plumbago Park (9.50) both winning in their last few races.

My hat is in Winter In Auckland’s ring, though, as the 4-yr-old bay filly has won twice in her last three races. Her recent win at Turffontein came just four days ago but was on the back of a 136-day break after a change of ownership. Perhaps a big ask, but she ran so smooth and easily I’m backing her to brave the winter chill of Joburg to claim her third career win.
