Last updated: 1 hour ago

The Global Racing Pick Four selections are Konfusion at Wetherby, Bright Script at Kyoto, Program Trading at Belmont Park, and Lazzura at Randwick (provisional). Program Trading is highlighted as having the most solid confirmed runner-and-rider profile, making it a standout among the picks. Konfusion is noted as a course specialist, while Bright Script is identified as a potential value angle. Lazzura's participation is provisional and subject to confirmation.

Weekend special: global horse racing wildcard odds

While the world's biggest racing festivals deserve their own deep dives, the sport does not stand still elsewhere. This weekend we follow the action from Yorkshire to Kyoto, across the Atlantic to New York and then down to Sydney.

The formats could hardly be more different: three-mile jumps, precocious two-year-old fillies, American turf specialists and a high-class Australian sprint. Here are our four early selections, with the declared-field caveats made explicit rather than disguised as certainty.

United Kingdom - Charlie Hall Chase (Grade 2)

Wetherby | Saturday, 31 October | 16:55 SAST | 3 miles 45 yards | Chase

Wetherby's three-mile autumn showpiece looks an outstanding jumping test, especially if the expected good ground holds. It has attracted 10 entries, including the high-class Pic D'Orhy, Hitman, Doyen Quest and local specialist Konfusion. Front-running rivals could ensure this is a proper stamina examination from a long way out rather than a short sprint after the final fence.

Our preference is Konfusion, trained by Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith. His course record is the attraction: he has won at Wetherby after breaks and followed a Rehearsal Chase success with another win here on Boxing Day. That experience could matter if the more fashionable contenders take each other on too early.

Pic D'Orhy's class and fresh record are major dangers, while Hitman has a case on suitable ground. The selection is a course-and-conditions play, not a certainty, and the final runners and jockeys still need confirming.

MY PICK: Konfusion - win or each-way, depending on final field size and price.
THE RISK: Step up to Grade 2 company and any change in going; jockey not yet shown on the early card.

Japan - KBS Kyoto Sho Fantasy Stakes (Grade 3)

Kyoto | Saturday, 31 October | 08:45 SAST | 1,400m turf | Two-year-old fillies

Kyoto's Fantasy Stakes is a fascinating window into Japan's next generation. The declared early card lists twelve two-year-old fillies for a sharp 1,400-metre test, with talent, position and racing inexperience all likely to play a part. Felicita brings established stakes credentials, while Imogen and Biscuit Sand add depth to the field.

Our speculative choice is Bright Script, a lightly raced daughter of this exciting crop whose early sprint speed offers upside against more exposed rivals. The published card lists Kenichi Ikezoe aboard for trainer T. Matsushita, with all runners carrying 55kg. The balance of risk and reward is important: the filly must translate her early promise into stronger company, and a poor early
position could be difficult to recover from.

Felicita is the most obvious danger on known race form. Treat Bright Script as an upside selection and confirm the final JRA card and market before locking it in.

MY PICK: Bright Script - win, subject to a value price.
THE RISK: Limited experience in a twelve-runner stakes field; compare her price with Felicita.

United States - Knickerbocker Stakes (Listed)

Belmont Park, New York | Saturday, 31 October | 21:58 SAST | 1 3/16 miles turf

Belmont Park supplies the American leg with a $175,000 Listed event over nine-and-a-half furlongs. Chad Brown's Program Trading breaks from gate one with Dylan Davis aboard. A multiple Grade 1-winning turf performer, he returned to the winner's enclosure in the Grade 2 United Nations in July and has since competed over twelve furlongs at the highest level.

Dropping to 1 3/16 miles could suit his class, though the inside draw may force Davis to work for the right position. Tiz Dashing, who beat Carson's Run and Cugino in August, is a dangerous tactical rival, while Carson's Run has signs of returning form. Program Trading's credentials are the strongest on paper, but his recent record at a longer trip means this is not a free hit.

MY PICK: Program Trading - win.
THE RISK: The shorter trip, inside post and a competitive nine-runner field.

Australia - Russell Balding Stakes (Group 2)

Royal Randwick, Sydney | Saturday, 31 October | Off-time TBC | 1,300m turf

Sydney's $3-million Group 2 sprint offers an intriguing alternative to the big Melbourne programme. The nominations include Jimmysstar, War Machine, Headwall, Pericles and Chris Waller's Lazzura, a mare whose latest performance immediately catches the eye. Lazzura won The Invitation at Randwick last Saturday despite a wide barrier, taking her career tally to eight victories from 20 starts.

Waller has suggested the mare is more likely to remain in Sydney than head to Flemington, which makes this 1,300-metre test a tantalising target. She clearly has the engine to feature and is my provisional pick, but there is one substantial question: can she reproduce that powerful run only seven days later? Jimmysstar and War Machine would be serious dangers if accepted.

MY PICK: Lazzura - provisional win selection ONLY if she accepts and the price is right. I would go for Jimmysstar if waiting to back a runner isn’t in your DNA.
THE RISK: Nominations are not declarations; the quick seven-day back-up may prove demanding.

Verdict

MY GLOBAL RACING PICK FOUR: Konfusion (Wetherby); Bright Script (Kyoto); Program Trading (Belmont Park); Lazzura (Randwick, provisional). Most solid confirmed runner-and-rider profile: Program Trading. Most interesting course specialist: Konfusion. Potential value angle: Bright Script.
