Betway to Launch Rand-Pegged Stablecoin Supercoin in South Africa
Super Group, the parent company of Betway, is set to launch a new stablecoin called Supercoin in South Africa this month to innovate digital payments. The initiative aligns with Super Group's strategy to reduce transaction costs, foster customer engagement, and expand its payment ecosystem in Africa. With the backing of Luno, a well-known crypto exchange, Supercoin will be pegged to the South African rand. The project not only reflects regional trends toward digital payments but also aims to provide a scalable model for similar initiatives globally.
- Supercoin, pegged 1:1 to the South African rand, launches in November 2025 in partnership with Luno
- A digital wallet enabling storage and use of Supercoin is planned for Q1 2026
- The initiative aims to cut transaction fees and strengthen customer loyalty across Betway’s African markets
Betway parent Super Group will launch a new stablecoin Supercoin in South Africa this month as part of a wider digital-payments strategy.
The new digital asset forms part of the company’s strategy to reduce transaction costs, strengthen customer engagement, and expand its payments ecosystem across Africa.
Supercoin Launch Details
Super Group chief executive Neal Menashe announced the initiative during the firm’s Q3 2025 earnings call.
The company plans to introduce Supercoin in partnership with Luno, one of South Africa’s largest consumer crypto exchanges.
The stablecoin will be pegged 1:1 to the South African rand and is intended to be used for payments, rewards, and cross-platform engagement within Betway’s product suite.
A digital wallet supporting Supercoin transactions is scheduled for release in Q1 2026. The wallet will enable customers to store, send, and use the coin across Betway’s ecosystem.
Super Group stated that the Supercoin launch is the first step in integrating digital-asset technology into its operations.
The company expects the initiative to create long-term cost efficiencies by reducing the need for third-party payment processors.
Africa as the Pilot Market
South Africa was chosen as the pilot market due to its high adoption of digital wallets and Betway’s large local customer base.
The company said it would consider launching similar, locally pegged coins in other markets once regulatory frameworks allow.
Super Group reported that African operations grew 36% year-on-year in Q3 2025, with South Africa up 23%. The group said the stablecoin project aligns with broader digital-payment trends across its regional markets, where card and mobile-money fees remain high.
Financial Context
Super Group reported Q3 2025 revenue of $557 million, a 26% increase year-on-year, and adjusted EBITDA of $152 million, up 65%.
The company raised its full-year revenue guidance to between $2.17 billion and $2.27 billion, citing customer growth and operational efficiency.
Management said that transaction fees in African markets average between 3% and 6% of deposits, compared with minimal fees in Europe.
Supercoin is expected to reduce these costs over time by keeping funds within the group’s ecosystem.
Regulatory and Operational Outlook
The company stated that Supercoin would initially be limited to South Africa and would comply with local financial and gaming regulations. Future expansion will depend on approval in each jurisdiction.
Super Group said implementation costs have been “manageable” and that it expects efficiency gains once adoption grows.
The initiative follows recent technology upgrades in Nigeria and new casino brand launches across several African markets.
Broader Industry Significance
Supercoin marks one of the first stablecoin initiatives by a major regulated iGaming operator. If successful, it could provide a model for other firms seeking to manage high transaction costs in markets with developing financial infrastructure.
