Ulster began the season with a 42-21 home win over the Dragons before their round two fixture against Edinburgh away was postponed due to a storm. That was followed by a convincing 28-7 victory over the Bulls at home.

Next, Ulster traveled to South Africa where they beat the Sharks 34-26 in Durban. In their final fixture before the international window, Ulster lost 49-31 to the Lions in Johannesburg.
