Thereafter Ghana failed to qualify again until the 2006 World Cup held in Germany. They did well, reaching the round of 16 before being knocked out in a 3-0 defeat to Brazil.

Ghana continued to show themselves as one of the strongest African sides in the following years. They again qualified for the 2010 event, the first to be held on African soil in South Africa.

This was Ghana’s finest performance at the World Cup. They advanced from the group stage with four points.

In the round of 16 Ghana beat the United States 2-1 after extra time, placing them in the quarter-final against Uruguay. This turned out to be one of the more dramatic World Cup games played.

Ghana took a 1-0 lead but Uruguay leveled matters early in the second half. In the final minute of the match it looked like Ghana had won it but Luis Suarez made a goalkeeper like save on the line. The forward was sent off, handing Ghana a penalty to seal their place in the semi-final.

Unfortunately the penalty was missed by Asamoah Gyan and the match went into extra time. Ghana couldn’t make the extra man count, eventually losing 4-2 on penalties.

In 2014 Ghana qualified again but this time failed to get out of the group stage despite an impressive 2-2 draw against Germany. They lost 2-1 to both the United States and Portugal.

For this first time in 16 years Ghana failed to qualify for the 2018 event. They have however made it to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and will once again hope to advance from the group.
