The Cape side began their season a fortnight ago with a 3-2 home win in the MTN 8 Cup quarter-final against AmaZulu. However, their PSL opener didn't go according to plan, losing 2-0 at home to Kaizer Chiefs.

Stellies had to play 77 minutes with 10 men after Siviwe Nkwali was shown red in the 13th minute. Chiefs scored shortly after and added a second six minutes into stoppage time.
