The Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars are set to face off, both coming off wins from their opening matches. The Strikers secured a victory against Sydney Sixers, thanks to an exceptional bowling performance and contributions from players like Lloyd Pope and Jamie Overton. Meanwhile, the Stars impressed with an emphatic win over the defending champions, Hurricanes, with standout performances from Marcus Stoinis and Campbell Kellaway. Predictions favor the Stars to continue their winning streak, highlighting Marcus Stoinis as a key player to watch for his impactful batting.

Adelaide Strikers vs Melbourne Stars Predictions

Both sides come into the match on the back of winning their opening match after restricting their opponents to under 160. I’m backing the Stars to take this match, as they beat the defending champions the Hurricanes by eight wickets with four overs in the bank.

  • Stars’ Marcus Stoinis hit nine boundaries in his 31-ball 62* against the Hurricanes.
  • Stars’ Campbell Kellaway has scored 82, 71 & 41* in his last 4 innings.
  • Strikers’ Liam Scott has scored 53, 31, 147 & 51 in his last 5 innings.
  • Strikers’ Jamie Overton has scored 46, 42, 68 & 30 in his last 4 innings.

Head-to-Head

The Stars have won three and lost two of their last five Big Bash matches against the Strikers. The Strikers won their last clash by 15 runs last December.

Adelaide Strikers Form

The Strikers sneaked home with four balls and three wickets to spare in their opener against the Sydney Sixers.

A great bowling display restricted the Sixers to 159/9 off their 20 overs. Lloyd Pope
(2/25) picked up two early wickets, but it was Luke Wood (3/26, econ 6.50) and Jamie Overton (2/22, econ 5.50) who did the most damage with the ball for the Strikers.

The Strikers recovered from 58/3 in the 8th over to hit the winning runs off the second ball of their final over. Liam Scott (51 off 32) and Jamie Overton (30 off 20) played key roles in the run chase.

Melbourne Stars Form

The Stars opened their campaign with a powerful win over the defending champions the Hurricanes, winning by eight wickets off just 16 overs.

Marcus Stoinis (2/18, econ 6.00) picked off two of the Hurricanes’ top four batters, while Peter Siddle (3/30, econ 7.50) made big inroads into the Hurricanes middle order.

Thomas Rogers (30 off 18) and Joe Clarke (20 off 20) got the innings off to a flying start. Campbell Kellaway (41 off 27) and Stoinis (62 off 31) added an undefeated 101 for the third wicket to take their side over the line with a fifth of their overs to spare.

Adelaide Strikers vs Melbourne Stars Team News

The Strikers’ Player of the Match in their opener was Jamie Overton, scoring 30 off 20 balls and picking up 2/22 and holding two catches against the Sixers.

“First game always want to get over the line. Tough place to come - they are one of the best franchises in the world. If you get off to a good start, assess the conditions and then stack up the back end,” said Overton after the match.

Marcus Stoinis commented on the Stars’ schedule and how it has allowed his side to ease into the competition.

“To be honest, the schedule has been nice to us.  We have had five days leading into it. Kellaway has had a good start to the domestic season… he was really good, really composed and is going to be a big star. He has been striking in the nets,” said Stoinis after the win over the Hurricanes.

Adelaide Strikers (possible XI): Matthew Short, Chris Lynn, Jason Sangha, Liam Scott, Alex Ross, Jamie Overton, Harry Nielsen, Luke Wood, Hasan Ali, Henry Thornton, Lloyd Pope.

Melbourne Stars (possible XI): Thomas Rogers, Joe Clarke, Campbell Kellaway, Marcus Stoinis, Sam Harper, Glenn Maxwell, Hilton Cartwright, Tom Curran, Mitchell Swepson, Haris Rauf, Peter Siddle.

Verdict

I am backing Melbourne Stars to win, with Marcus Stoinis to top score.
