South African-born dual international David Wiese has been named as former South African captain Faf du Plessis’ replacement as St Lucia Kings skipper for their 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Du Plessis will be undergoing groin surgery soon and has been forced to withdraw from this season’s CPL, which sees the Kings defend the title they won in 2024 under Du Plessis’ leadership. Du Plessis ended fourth on the CPL runs list for the 2024 season.

Wiese has vast experience in T20 cricket, scoring 4,472 runs and taking 327 wickets in his career. He has been an integral part of the St Lucia Kings squad since 2021, which was a key factor in his appointment.

"I am absolutely humbled to be named your captain. This season, we will be playing with passion, heart and unity. You will see us give everything for each other and for you. Let's make this a special season – let's paint Saint Lucia blue!" said Wiese after being announced as captain for the 2025 season.

In their championship season last year, Wiese picked up 13 wickets (econ 8.34) and scored 121 runs (ave 40.33, S/R 168.05). In the final, Wiese returned figures of 3-0-34-1 as St Lucia restricted the defending champs the Guyana Amazon Warriors to 138/8 off their 20 overs. Wiese wasn’t needed to contribute with the bat as the Kings lifted the crown for the loss of four wickets off 18.1 overs.

Wiese had played a crucial role for the franchise last year, scoring 121 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 168.05 and an average of 40.33.

"David Wiese has been a part of the family for a long time. He has been with us for a number of years and has put on some excellent performances," said St Lucia head coach Daren Sammy.

Wiese has previously served as captain for the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL and the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

St Lucia’s first match of the 2025 campaign will be on 17 August when they take on the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in North Sound
