IPL 2026 season - IPL records smashed as Green becomes most expensive overseas player
Cameron Green made IPL history as the most expensive overseas player after Kolkata Knight Riders secured him for INR 25.20 crore. This marked Green as the third-most expensive player in IPL auction history. The auction also saw significant buys like Sri Lanka's Pathirana valued at INR 18 crore by the same franchise. There's also a focus on uncapped players with Chennai Super Kings signing Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma at INR 14.2 crore each. Other notable picks included Jason Holder, Rahul Chahar, and Josh Inglis.

Aussie all-rounder Cameron Green made history at the IPL auction in Abu Dhabi on 16 December when the Kolkata Knight Riders laid down INR 25.20 crore ($2.8 million) for his services for the coming season. That bid has made Green the third-most expensive player ever sold at an IPL auction, in addition to his signature achieving the highest price in the history of the IPL for an overseas player.
Green averages 41.58 (707 runs) in his two seasons in the IPL, along with taking 16 wickets (S/R 27.4). He played for the Mumbai Indians in 2023 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024, but serious injuries caused him to miss the 2025 season. Ironically, the morning after the auction Green was out for a second-ball duck on day one of the 3rd Ashes Test.

The Knight Riders also splashed out INR 18 crore ($1.97 million) for Sri Lankan paceman Matheesha Pathirana, a death-over specialist who has picked up 47 wickets in 32 matches (ave 21.61) for the Chennai Super Kings… but he has yet to face a ball himself with the bat!
Spotlight shines on uncapped players
The other big news of the day were the prices paid for uncapped Indian players. Left-arm spin-bowling allrounder Prashant Veer (20) and keeper Kartik Sharma (19) were both snapped up by the Chennai Super Kings. Each player went under the hammer at a final bid of INR 14.2 crore. The previous high for an uncapped Indian player was the INR 10 crore paid for Avesh Khan.
Auqib Nabi (the Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler) also enjoyed a big payday when the Delhi Capitals forked out INR 8.4 crore for him.
Other big-name buys
The other big-ticket buys that fell during the accelerated round late in the auction included Sri Lanka batter Pathum Nissanka (Delhi Capitals, INR 4 crore), West Indies allrounder Jason Holder (Gujarat Titans, INR 7 crore), Bangladesh quick Mustafizur Rahman (Kolkata Knight Riders, INR 9.2 crore), legspinner Rahul Chahar (Chennai Super Kings, INR 5.2 crore) and Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis (Lucknow Super Giants, INR 8.6 crore).
