Melbourne Renegades vs Sydney Sixers Predictions

The Sixers have a brilliant record against the Renegades, but I’m backing the Melbourne outfit to turn things around with the benefit of home ground advantage.

  • Melbourne Renegades’ Tim Seifert hit two sixes in his 13-ball 26 against the Hurricanes.
  • Melbourne Renegades’ Oliver Peake has scored 57 & 29 in his last 3 innings.
  • Sydney Sixers’ Daniel Hughes has scored 25 & 60 in his last 2 innings.
  • Sydney Sixers’ Josh Philippe has scored 28, 46 & 96 in his last 4 innings.

Head-to-Head

The Sixers have won their last five matches against the Renegades.

Melbourne Renegades Form

The Renegades followed up their win in their opening match against the Heat with back-to-back defeats by seven and four wickets respectively.

Tim Seifert followed his opening day ton with two decent knocks at an overall strike-rate of 178.02. Mohammad Rizwan has made some good starts but has yet to kick-on, and the Renegades will be hoping for some substantial innings from the Pakistan star. Jake Fraser-McGurk has scored 14, 7 and 14 in his three innings in the Big Bash this season and will be anxious to crack through to post a big score.

Adam Zampa took 3/25 in his second match of the season, but had been sidelined through a neck injury. Jason Behrendorff has picked up valuable wickets (2/34 and 2/35). Gurinder Sandhu has offered good support (2/25, 1/29 and 1/50) but has been going for 11.40 runs to the over. Andrew Tye made a good start against the Hurricanes (1/29) on the back of returns of 2/25, 1/14 and 3/24 for the Riders in the Abu Dhabi T10.

Sydney Sixers Form

The Sixers suffered their third defeat in four matches when they lost to the Stars by seven wickets.

Josh Philippe, Daniel Hughes and Jack Edwards have been the big providers of runs for the Sixers. Moises Henriques has yet to fire and will be feeling the pressure. The Sixers’ big name signing, Babar Azam, has again struggled to get to grips with Australian pitches, posting scores of 2, 9 and 2, along with one impressive half-century. If Babar can hit his straps it will go a long way to pushing the Sixers into the playoffs.

Jack Edwards (5/26, econ 6.50) was the match-winner in the Sixers’ only win of the season. In his previous two matches he returned figures of 2/27 and 1/22. Joel Davies bowled superbly against the Stars, returning figures of 4-0-16-2 (econ 4.00) on the back of 3/24 and 1/3 against the Strikers.

Melbourne Renegades vs Sydney Sixers Team News

The Renegades have been dealt a major blow ahead of the New Year’s Day shootout against the Sixers. Star spinner Adam Zampa has been forced out of the side through a strained neck muscle. His place has been taken by Fergus O’Nell.

On the back of three defeats in four matches, the Sixers have sidelined Kane Richardson and Jake Scott. Into the matchday squad come Hayden Kerr and Mitch Perry.

Melbourne Renegades (matchday squad): Jason Behrendorff, Josh Brown, Sam Elliott, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Caleb Jewell, Hassan Khan, Fergus O'Neill, Ollie Peake, Muhammad Rizwan, Gurinder Sandhu, Tim Seifert, Matthew Spoors, Will Sutherland (c), Andrew Tye.

Sydney Sixers (matchday squad): Sean Abbott, Babar Azam, Jafer Chohan, Joel Davies, Bem Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Moises Henriques (c), Daniel Hughes, Hayden Kerr, Ben Manenti, Mitch Perry, Josh Philippe, Lachlan Shaw, Jordan Silk.

Verdict

I am backing Melbourne Renegades to win, with Tim Seifert to top score.
