India vs South Africa 3rd ODI Predictions - Markram to seal the series for the Proteas

Editor
Last updated: 6 minutes ago

South Africa is on the brink of making history by potentially becoming the first team to beat India in both a Test and ODI series at home since 1986-87. After an impressive performance in the Test series and a win in the 2nd ODI, South Africa looks to ride the momentum for a 2-1 series victory. The toss plays a crucial role due to the influence of evening dew. Aiden Markram and Virat Kohli are in exceptional form and pivotal to their respective teams. Despite a run of 20 unsuccessful tosses, India hopes to turn their luck around.

India vs South Africa Predictions

South Africa are on the verge of making history as the first team to beat India at home in a Test and ODI series since 1986-87. After their emphatic win in the Test series as well as winning the 2nd ODI after a great chase in a losing cause in the 1st ODI, you’d have to back the Proteas to ride the wave to a 2-1 series win.

  • South Africa’s Aiden Markram has scored 82, 86, 49 & 110 in his last 8 ODI innings.
  • South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke scored 72 & 68 in the first two ODIs.
  • India’s Virat Kohli hit seven sixes in his 135-ball 153 in the 2nd ODI.
  • India’s Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 105 off 83 balls in the 2nd ODI.

Head-to-Head

South Africa have won two and lost three of their last five ODIs against India. A lot will depend on the toss because of the effect of the evening dew on the bowlers. India haven’t won a toss in their last 20 ODIs… which is a bad omen for the home side, although all runs of bad luck have to end at some stage!

India Form

After claiming back-to-back ODI wins, India lost to South Africa by four wickets as the visitors levelled the series at 1-1.

Virat Kohli’s breathtaking back-to-back centuries were complemented by innings of 57 by Rohit Sharma and 60 by KL Rahul in the 1st ODI. In the 2nd ODI Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a powerful 105 off 83 balls in a 195-stand for the third wicket with Kohli, followed by another impressive cameo from KL Rahul (66* off 43 balls).

Kuldeep Yadav starred with the ball in the 1st ODI, taking 4/68, with great support from Harshit Rana (3/65). Arshdeep Singh (2/64 & 2/54) and Prasidh Krishna (1/48 & 2/85) delivered valuable spells in both matches.

South Africa Form

South Africa bounced back from back-to-back defeats to chase down India’s target of 359 with four balls and four wickets to spare.

Aiden Markram came good with the bat when it mattered in the 2nd ODI. Matthew Breetzke batted well in both ODIs and has an incredible average of 68.20. The lower middle-order has also contributed vital runs, but South Africa will be hoping that Quinton de Kock hits double figures for the first time in the series.

Marco Jansen (2/76 & 2/63) has been the Proteas best bowler over the first two ODIs, while Ottneil Baartman (2/60, econ 6.00) and Lungi Ngidi (1/51, econ 5.10) have returned the most economical figures with the ball.

India & South Africa Team News

India’s batting is super hot and won’t need any tinkering from the selectors. Their bowling is generally strong, although Prasidh Krishna is the most expensive bowler in the series, being carted for 8.48 an over in the first two matches. India are unlikely to replace him as they don’t have another specialist bowler in the side and are unlikely to risk a full bowling complement of overs being allocated to an all–rounder who is unlikely to be needed as a batter.

Possible India XI: 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 5 KL Rahul (c/wk), 6 Washington Sundar, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harshit Rana, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Prasidh Krishna.

South Africa suffered two hamstring injuries in the 2nd ODI, with Nandre Burger and Tony de Zorzi presumably to be replaced by Ottneil Baartman and Ryan Rickelton.

Possible South Africa XI: 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Temba Bavuma (c), 4 Matthew Breetzke, 5 Ryan Rickelton, 6 Dewald Brevis, 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Corbin Bosch, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Ottneil Baartman.

Verdict

I am backing South Africa to win. I am also backing Aiden Markram to top score for South Africa.

Virat Kohli is a good bet to top score for India.
