The Super Kings were going great guns with three wins on the bounce before a rained-out match and a thrilling defeat to MI Cape Town. On the other hand, the Royals reversed a defeat in their opener by securing three wins in a row. The Wanderers track is batting friendly, averaging 180 for the side batting first and it should suit the expansive Royals top order.

Aside from scoring 205/4 against the Super Giants (who matched their score before losing in the Super Over), the Super Kings batters haven’t been consistent, with their leading run-scorer (Faf du Plessis, 96 runs, ave 24.00) not yet past 100 runs for the season. Shubham Ranjane has shown some ability to score quick runs, as has Rilee Rossouw (48 and 43), but the latter is out with an injury.

Richard Gleeson is third in the wickets list with nine wickets (ave 14.11), although his three overs in the rain-reduced defeat to MI Cape Town went for 17 runs apiece. Akeal Hosein and Duan Jansen (4/23 vs Capitals) have each chipped in with five wickets this season.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius has fired just once this season, beating his previous SA20 high score of 97 by scoring 98* against MI Cape Town. He has failed in three of his innings but is looking dangerous. Asa Tribe has been a consistent performer at the top of the order, scoring 14 (top score!), 51 and 34 in his four innings this season. The Royals rolled MI Cape Town for 88 in Cape Town after they had won the toss: "Terrible start to the season but boys are falling into their roles nicely. Love how the guys are celebrating, enjoying themselves and finding ways to win. Raza is a young 39-year old with all his experience. Lot of energy and very wise - got a good cricket brain. When the guys signed Baartman, I always loved how he takes challenges. He's always taking the batters on. Lot of experience on his side too," said Royals skipper David Miller.

The Super Kings had been riding high before being frustrated by the rain and a late flurry of sixes that took MI Cape Town to a dramatic first win for the season in their last match. "We played a good game. Frustrating thing is that Duckworth Lewis in T20s still has a long way to go. Cloudy conditions made it tough to catch. Wet conditions made fielding difficult as well as death bowling. Otherwise our boys have been doing well," said losing captain Faf du Plessis.
