The Super Kings are agonisingly close to the playoffs but could still lose out to MI Cape Town. They have lost their last three completed matches, while the Capitals have won three of their last four. Backing the Capitals is the easy decision for me.

The Super Kings suffered their third defeat in a row when they lost to the Sunrisers by 61 runs.

James Vince has stormed ahead as the Super Kings leading batter, hitting 197 runs at a strike-rate of 166.94. Dian Forrester (80*) added 66 with Vince for the 4th wicket in the defeat to MI Cape Town, but with Faf du Plessis out injured there has been little other support from the top order.

Richard Gleeson is the Super Kings’ top bowler with nine wickets, snapping up 3/2 and 3/41 in his last four matches. Akeal Hosein is next on their list with six wickets in six innings, but his key contribution has been keeping the runs down to 7.21 runs per over.

After winning three matches on the bounce the Capitals lost to the Royals by six wickets with 29 balls remaining.

The Capitals’ surge up the table has been driven largely by power-hitting from Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford, who are 3rd and 4th in the SA20 runs list. Rutherford has made a massive contribution in the death overs, scoring at a rate of 173.57 runs per 100 balls faced.

Gideon Peters has been phenomenal with the ball, taking 3/35, 1/11, 3/32 and 1/27 in the Capitals’ last four matches. Lungi Ngidi took 3/39 against the Super Giants followed by 1/35, 1/29 and 1/24 in his last four matches.
