The Betway SA20 has quickly become the premier T20 tournament in South Africa, showcasing established South African cricketers, up-and-coming stars and the best international players in just two seasons.
The Betway SA20 was established by Cricket South Africa in 2022 after the unsuccessful T20 Global League and Mzanzi Super League tournaments a few years earlier.
Franchises from the Indian Premier League (IPL) bought the six teams that compete annually in the Betway SA20 competition.
Teams acquire a squad of 17 players via an auction; however, they can sign five cricketers before the auction, which includes three international players, one South African international cricketer, and one uncapped South African player.
The sides that finish first and second on the table play a qualifier to see who will make the final of the Betway SA20, with the third and fourth placed teams playing an eliminator to decide who will face the loser of the first qualifier.
The loser of the first qualifier and winner of the eliminator play an additional qualifier to see who will reach the final of the Betway SA20.
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape defeated the Pretoria Capitals by four wickets in the 2023 final to become the inaugural champions of the Betway SA20, and they repeated their success the following season by thrashing Durban's Super Giants by 89 runs in the 2024 final.
