Sydney Thunder vs Brisbane Heat Predictions

The Thunder has lost their first two matches of the season, while the Heat have bounced back with a record win against the Scorchers with one ball to spare. Right now the Thunder aren’t performing well enough with bat or ball to deserve serious backing.

  • Brisbane Heat’s Jack Wildermuth hit nine sixes and five fours in his 54-ball 110* against the Scorchers.
  • Brisbane Heat’s Matt Renshaw has hit three centuries and a 50 in his last 7 innings.
  • Sydney Thunder’s Sam Billings scored 36 of his 51 runs against the Sixers in boundaries.
  • Sydney Thunder’s Shadab Khan has scored 48, 34 & 41 in his last 4 innings.

Head-to-Head

Brisbane Heat have won four and lost one of their last five Big Bash matches against the Thunder, including the last four in a row. Their most recent win was by five wickets back in January.

Sydney Thunder Form

The Thunder have started their campaign with back-to-back losses, the most recent a 47-run defeat to the Sixers.

Shadab Khan and Sam Billings staged a mini-revival, lifting the Thunder from 45/4 to 94/5, but with the middle order and tail not firing, they were bowled out for 151 in the final over. Sam Billings hit his first score above 13 in six innings, although four of those innings were not out.

Shadab Khan’s good run of form with the bat has been matched with figures of 2/26, 1/13 and 2/36 in his last four matches. Reece Topley (3/41) and Nathan McAndrew (2/41) were the pick of the Thunder bowlers against the Sixers, but couldn’t stop them from reaching 198 of their 20 overs.

Brisbane Heat Form

After the frustration of a 14-run defeat in their opener, the Heat have been reignited by their record run chase that saw them beat the Scorchers by eight wickets with one ball in hand.

The Heat were staring down the barrel after conceding 257/6 against the Scorchers. Xavier Bartlett (2/44) returned the best figures with the ball and was the “cheapest” of the Heat bowlers, going for just 11.00 runs to the over. Star paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi struggled again in his 2nd BBL outing, returning 1/49 to follow on his 0/43 in his side’s opener.

The Heat pulled off the highest successful chase in the BBL when they chased down 258 against the Scorchers, also the third-highest chase in T20 cricket. Jack Wildermuth (110* off 54) and Matt Renshaw (102 off 51) became the first batters to score hundreds in a T20 run chase in their record-breaking stand of 212 for the second wicket.

Team News

The Heat are back on the winning track and are unlikely to make any changes to their side. The Thunder are not looking convincing, but they have a strong player unit so the word is they will give them another run before ringing the changes.

Brisbane Heat (possible XI): Colin Munro, Jack Wildermuth, Matthew Renshaw, Max Bryant, Hugh Weibgen, Nathan McSweeney (c), Xavier Bartlett, Jimmy Peirson, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Liam Haskett, Matthew Kuhnemann.

Sydney Thunder (possible XI): Sam Konstas, Matthew Gilkes, Cameron Bancroft, Oliver Davies, Sam Billings (w), Shadab Khan, Daniel Sams, Chris Green (c), Nathan McAndrew, Tanveer Sangha, Reece Topley.

Verdict

I am backing Brisbane Heat to win, with Jack Wildermuth to top score.
