England vs New Zealand T20 Cricket World Cup Super 8 Predictions - Allen to hand England their second World Cup defeat

Editor
Last updated: 2 hours ago

In the upcoming cricket clash, England and New Zealand face off with varying forms. England, despite a single loss, has reached the semi-finals but hasn’t been dominant. In contrast, New Zealand has been strong, except for a setback against South Africa and a rain-affected match against Pakistan. Key players like Finn Allen for New Zealand and Harry Brook for England are expected to perform crucial roles. Betting odds favor New Zealand to win, with Allen and Brook predicted to top score for their respective sides. Matt Henry is highlighted as New Zealand's best bowling option.

England vs New Zealand Predictions

England have lost just one match on their way to a spot in the semi–finals, although they have been far from a dominant force in most of their five wins. New Zealand have dominated all of their opponents, aside from their loss to South Africa and their rained off fixture against Pakistan.

  • New Zealand’s Finn Allen (160 runs, S/R 177.77) is 12th in the World Cup strike-rate list.
  • New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra has scored 59* & 32 in his last 2 innings.
  • England’s Harry Brook (202 runs, S/R 172.64) is 4th in the World Cup runs list.
  • England’s Phil Salt has scored 30, 28 & 62 in his last 5 innings.

Head-to-Head

New Zealand have won one and lost two of their last five T20Is against England. Two of those matches were rained-off.

England Form

After their loss to the West Indies in their Group C match, England won their next four matches in a row. Their last win was a two-wicket victory over Pakistan with five balls to spare.

England did well to restrict Pakistan to 73/3 in the 11th over. Jamie Overton (2/26) picked up two of Pakistan’s top four, while Jofra Archer (2/32) and Liam Dawson (3/24) also kept the pressure on Pakistan, who ended their 20 overs on 164/9.

England also found themselves in trouble at 35/3 in the fifth over and 58/4 at the start of the eighth over. Skipper Harry Brook rescued England with a masterful innings of 100 off 51 balls (10 fours, four sixes). Sam Curran (16) and Will Jacks (28) were the only other England batters to reach double figures as they squeezed home for the win.

New Zealand Form

After their opening match in the Super 8s against Pakistan was rained off, New Zealand picked up their first win of the playoff stage when they beat Sri Lanka by 61 runs.

New Zealand struggled early on against excellent Sri Lanka bowling and battled their way to 84/6 in the 13th over, Finn Allen (23 off 13) and Rachin Ravindra (32 off 22) putting on the early runs.

Mitchell Santner (47 off 26) and Cole McConchie (31 off 23) shared six sixes in their 86-run stand for the seventh wicket off 7.5 overs to lift New Zealand to a more competitive score of 168/7 off their 20 overs.

Matt Henry struck early, snagging Sri Lanka’s first two wickets to fall in his first seven deliveries to pick up figures of 2/3 (econ 1.50) off his two overs. The Kiwi bowlers all contributed to tightening the screws on the Sri Lanka batters, with none of their bowlers going for more than 6.75 runs to the over.

Rachin Ravindra knocked over four of Sri Lanka’s top seven batters in a stunning spell of bowling. Ravindra ended with figures of 4-0-27-4 (econ 6.75) as Sri Lanka were restricted to a score of 107/8 off their 20 overs, in the process ending their dreams of a semi-final spot early.

England vs New Zealand Team News & Squads

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner expressed his relief during the post-match interviews that his side scored enough runs to pull off a strong win to put themselves in a good position to qualify for the semi-finals.

"It was one of those wickets where if you get in, give yourself a bit of time, you can cash in. It looked like a pretty good wicket, spun more than we thought. We were thinking 140, so 160 was not bad from there. The stats say it spins more when you bowl slower, so I didn't need a second invitation,” said Santner.

England captain Harry Brook was the hero of his side’s win over Pakistan that secured their semi-final spot. Speaking in the post-match interview, Brook admitted that coach Brendon McCullum was the mastermind of their victory.

“We've come here to do a job and we got it done. Baz was the mastermind behind it and he came up in the morning and spoke with me. We wanted to try and maximise the powerplay a little more. They know I like to take the game on. Thankfully it came off and we got a decent start,” said Brook.

England squad (possible XI): Harry Brook (c), Tom Banton, Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid.

New Zealand (possible XI): Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner (c), James Neesham, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Jacob Duffy.

Verdict

I am backing New Zealand to win. I am also backing Finn Allen to top score for New Zealand.

Harry Brook is a good bet to top score for England.
