India vs South Africa Predictions

India are in a no-lose position after the 4th T20I was abandoned, as they can’t lose the series, but a win would offer an emphatic 3-1 series win. While India are looking far stronger than South Africa and are favoured to win, one of the Proteas’ strengths is fighting back in the face of adversity, so they are likely to put up a strong fight in the 5th T20I.

  • India’s Tilak Varma has scored 26, 62 and 26* in the first three T20Is.
  • India’s Hardik Pandya has scored 77*, 59* & 20 in his last four innings.
  • South Africa’s Aiden Markram scored 61 off 46-balls (two sixes) against India in the 3rd T20I.
  • South Africa’s Quinton de Kock has scored 106 & 90 in his last 4 innings.

Head-to-Head

India have won three and lost one of their last five T20Is against South Africa. The last match was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

India Form

India have won two and lost one of the first four T20Is in the series against South Africa to take a 2-1 series lead with one match remaining after the 4th match was abandoned.

Suryakumar Yadav is under pressure to produce runs having not scored a T20I half-century for over a year. With just one match before a lengthy break from T20Is, India are likely to keep the faith with him in the hope that he will hit form again.

Shivam Dube has also been short of runs, but Abhishek Sharma has shown white-ball form, scoring 34, 62 & 35 in his last 5 innings.

Varun Chakravarthy has taken six wickets at an economy rate of 5.36 in the series, while Arshdeep Singh (2/14 and 2/13) played a key role in India’s wins in the series, as did Kuldeep Yadav (4/68, 4/41 and 2/21).

South Africa Form

South Africa have lost four of their last five completed T20Is after losing to India by seven wickets in the 3rd T20I.

Quinton de Kock (90 off 46 balls in the 2nd T20I) and Aiden Markram (61 off 46 balls in the 3rd T20I) have put together big innings in the series, but the rest of the top order has added little support. If the top order can finally fire they should smoke the Indians to level the series, but it’s not looking promising.

Marco Jansen has been magnificent on this tour in terms of his economy rate, even if he’s not among the leading white-ball wicket-takers. Ottneil Baartman (4/24) was the hero of the 2nd T20I victory win, while Lutho Sipamla has returned figures of 2/38 and 2/46. The Proteas’ star bowler has been Lung Ngidi, with six wickets in the series at a strike-rate of a wicket every 10 balls.

India vs South Africa Team News & Squads

Jasprit Bumrah returns to the squad after being given time off for a personal matter, but Axar Patel will miss the decider after falling ill. Shubman Gill is struggling with a toe injury and his place could be taken by Sanju Samson.

India possible XI: 1 Abhishek Sharma, 2 Shubman Gill/Sanju Samson, 3 Suryakumar Yadav (c), 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Jitesh Sharma (w), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Shivam Dube, 8 Harshit Rana/ Washington Sundar, 9 Arshdeep Singh, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Varun Chakravarthy

South Africa possible XI: 1 Quinton de Kock (w), 2 Reeza Hendricks, 3 Aiden Markram (c), 4 Dewald Brevis, 5 David Miller, 6 Donovan Ferreira, 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Corbin Bosch, 9 George Linde/Keshav Maharaj/Anrich Nortje, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Ottneil Baartman.

Verdict

I am backing India to win. Tilak Varma looks the best bet to hit the top score for India, while Varun Chakravarthy is most in-form best bowler.

Aiden Markram looks a good call to top score for South Africa.
