  • New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner has scored 47, 43 & 20 in his last 4 innings.
  • South Africa’s Connor Esterhuizen hit 2 sixes in his 45* on T20I debut in the 1st T20I.

Head-to-Head

New Zealand have won three and lost two of their last five T20Is against South Africa.

New Zealand Form

After New Zealand lost 3 T20Is out of 4, they beat South Africa to make it 2 wins in their last 4.

Devon Conway (60 off 49) was the rock of the Black Caps innings. Conway enjoyed good support from Nick Kelly (21 off 12) and Mitchell Santner (20 off 14).

Cole McConchie (18* off 12) and Josh Clarkson (26* off 9) added quick runs at the end to lift New Zealand to 175/6.

South Africa Form

South Africa suffered their second defeat in 3 T20Is against New Zealand when they lost to their hosts by 68 runs in the 2nd T20I of their 5-match season.

South Africa’s bowlers did well to keep the Kiwis top-order in check for the first 15 overs, only for the lower middle-order to hit out at the close. Four Proteas bowlers picked up a single wicket, with Wiaan Mulder (2/14, econ 7.00) returning the best figures with the ball.

Chasing 176 off 20 overs, the Proteas collapsed to 67/5 in the 11th overs. George Linde (33 off 12) hit 3 sixes and 3 fours, but no other Proteas batter reached 20.

Wiaan Mulder has been brought back into the side after some superb form with bat and ball in domestic cricket. He took 2/14 in the New Zealand 1st innings on the back of figures of 7/6, 5/39 and 3/48 for the Lions. He has also scored 115, 57, 30 and 50* in his last five innings.

New Zealand vs South Africa Team News & Squads

South African-born Devon Conway earned the Player of the Match award for his top score of 60 that set up the win for his side.

“Facing a bowler from around the wicket was something new for me. It has been a pretty quiet few months for me, going to India and not featuring in the World Cup. I have played with some of the South Africa guys growing up and if they speak Afrikaans I can understand,” said Conway during the post-match presentation.

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner admitted he was relieved that his side had done well with the bat under the conditions.

“It looked tricky with the bat early on but we got a decent score. The blueprint with the ball was to hit the hard lengths, and when you slowed it up, there was some help from the pitch. It was nice to get an above-par score in the end,” said Santner in his TV interview after the match.

Proteas captain Keshav Maharaj was frustrated with his team’s performance with the bat when interview after the match.

“I think we bowled really well but lost our way with the bat. There was dew but the pitch got worse to bat on. As a seam-bowling unit, the guys have done really well. There was some salvaging from George with the bat, so there were some positives,” said Maharaj.

New Zealand T20I squad: Mitchell Santner (c), Katene Clarke, Josh Clarkson, Dane Cleaver, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Zak Foulkes, Bevon Jacobs, Kyle Jamieson, Nick Kelly, Tom Latham (c), Jayden Lennox, Cole McConchie, Jimmy Neesham, Tim Robinson, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith, Ish Sodhi.

South Africa T20I squad: Keshav Maharaj (c), Ottneil Baartman, Wiaan Mulder, Gerald Coetzee, Tony de Zorzi, Connor Esterhuizen, Dian Forrester, Jordan Hermann, Rubin Hermann, George Linde, Nqobani Mokoena, Andile Simelane, Lutho Sipamla, Prenelan Subrayen, Jason Smith.
