South Africa had a brilliant start to the T20 World Cup, winning their seven matches in the group stage and the Super 8s. They beat New Zealand by seven wickets in their Group D match, only to be beaten by New Zealand in the semi-final by nine wickets.

After losing in the semi-final, South Africa bounced back in the five-match series in New Zealand less than a fortnight after the World Cup had ended. Both teams were resting many of their first-choice players after the World Cup. South Africa won the 1st T20I but lost the next two on the bounce, giving New Zealand three wins in four T20Is against South Africa.

New Zealand have won six of their last eight T20Is against South Africa, with the Proteas claiming two victories.

Team News

New Zealand: World Cup skipper Mitchell Santner is being rested for the last two matches of the series after a busy World Cup schedule. Opener Tom Latham will take over the captaincy. Opener Devon Conway and paceman Lockie Ferguson are also being rested for the last two T20Is.

Josh Clarkson and Dane Cleaver join the squad for the last two matches, along with Katene Clarke and Jayden Lennox, with the latter pair in line to make their T20I debuts.

South Africa: The Proteas batting has been found wanting, which is not surprising considering how inexperienced their top-order is with their World Cup stars being rested. Top-order batters Connor Esterhuizen and Dian Forrester made their debut on this tour, while their top-order team-mates Wiaan Mulder, Tony de Zorzi, Jason Smith and Rubin Hermann have just 33 T20I caps between them.

"We are very inexperienced so you can understand the inconsistencies, but it's not an excuse. We're all professional enough; we are representing our country, so we've just got to go look back at ourselves and find ways through it,” said Proteas skipper Keshav Maharaj at the post-match press conference

“We have to put away our egos when it comes to playing on these types of wickets, because it doesn't allow you to play with the freedom that you want at times. I wouldn't use it as an excuse, even though we have a very inexperienced squad. Guys are professional enough and mature enough to find ways to combat it," added Maharaj.

Key Stats

  • New Zealand have won 6 and lost 2 of their last 8 T20Is against South Africa.

  • New Zealand’s Tom Latham has scored 79, 101* and 63* in his last 5 innings.
  • South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj has taken 2/35, 1/45 and 1/30 in the first 3 T20Is.
  • South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee (3 wickets, econ 5.90) is their most economical bowler.
  • South Africa’s Connor Esterhuizen (68 runs, ave 34.00) is their leading run-scorer.

Match Analysis

After recovering from the shock of their heavy defeat in the 1st T20I, New Zealand have come back strong to beat the Proteas by 68 runs and eight wickets to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

The Proteas' top-order is looking brittle and they have a tough job trying to crack a New Zealand attack with four bowlers (Lockie Ferguson, Zak Foulkes, Mitchell Santner and Ben Sears) going for less than six to the over. In contrast, Gerald Coetzee is the only South Africa to keep the Kiwis to under six to the over.

The Proteas will be glad that their hosts are resting Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway and Lockie Ferguson for the remaining two matches, but the Black Caps are looking strong contenders to take the series 4-1.

Betting Markets to Watch

Player Performance

It’s been a low-scoring series, but the 4th match is set for Wellington, with half of the innings scores being between 149 and 219. Connor Esterhuizen, Tom Latham and Tim Robinson are all good bets to score over 30.

Player of the Match

With Devon Conway and Mitchell Santner being rested, batting opener Tom Latham is a good bet to have the biggest impact on the match with the bat. Ben Sears is most likely to be the match-winner with the ball for New Zealand.

Team Opening Partnership

South Africa’s make-shift and inexperienced openers have scored 7, 29 and 7 for the 1st wicket in the series, while New Zealand’s openers have put on 2, 48 and 96. New Zealand are solid to back for the best opening partnership of the match
