The New Zealand Women's cricket team displayed dominance in the 1st T20I against South Africa, winning by 80 runs and taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Amelia Kerr and Georgia Plimmer were instrumental in building a solid innings. New Zealand's bowlers, particularly Jess Kerr and Sophie Devine, dismantled the Proteas' batting line-up. South Africa struggled despite efforts from Tazmin Brits and Masabata Klaas. Looking ahead, New Zealand is expected to continue their winning streak with key performances from Amelia Kerr and strong bowling from Sophie Devine.

New Zealand vs South Africa Women Predictions

New Zealand Women showed their top-order strength by posting a good first innings score. Their bowlers also had the measure of the Proteas batters and I can’t see the visitors finding their feet on New Zealand soil in time to win the 2nd T20I.

  • New Zealand Women’s Amelia Kerr hit 2 sixes in her 44-ball 78 in the 1st T20I.
  • New Zealand Women’s Georgia Plimmer hit 3 sixes in her 44-ball 63 vs the Proteas.
  • South Africa Women’s Tazmin Brits (1793 runs) averages 31.45 in T20Is.
  • South Africa Women’s Annerie Dercksen has scored 31, 90, 54 & 61 in her last 5 innings.

Head-to-Head

New Zealand Women have won three and lost one of their last five T20Is against South Africa Women.

New Zealand Women Form

New Zealand Women made it four wins in a row when they beat the Proteas by 80 runs in the 1st T20I to take a 1-0 lead in the 5-match series.

After losing Isabella Gaze off the first ball run out while backing up, Georgia Plimmer (63 off 44) and Amelia Kerr (78 off 44) shared 5 sixes in a record 146-run stand for the 2nd wicket off 14 overs. The middle-order chipped in to lift the White Ferns to 190/7 off their 20 overs.

Jess Kerr (2/13, econ 3.25) made early inroads into the Proteas’ top order to reduce them to 17/2 after four overs. Sophie Devine knocked over half of the Proteas’ top-order (4/12, econ 3.00) as the visitors struggled to 110/7 off their 20 overs.

South Africa Women Form

South Africa Women suffered back-to-back defeats when they lost to New Zealand Women by 80 runs in the 1st T20I.

The Proteas struggled to contain the New Zealand top-order as they posted 190/7 off their 20 overs. Nadine de Klerk (2/32) picked up two wickets late in the innings, but the star of the innings was Masabata Klaas.

The medium-pace bowler picked up two of New Zealand’s top four batters while returning superb figures of 4-0-15-2 (econ 3.75).

Tazmin Brits (29 off 35) did her best to get the Proteas off to a good start as wickets fell around her. Nadine de Klerk (19 off 19) and Kayla Reyneke (24* off 18) lifted the Proteas past 100 but it wasn’t enough to prevent an 80-run defeat.

New Zealand Women vs South Africa Women Team News & Squads

New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr was named Player of the Match after top-scoring for her side.

“When batting in the powerplay, you are trying to access gaps to hit boundaries. Nice to have a big partnership with her. Don't believe too much in form. Have to take each game as it comes. If you are putting in the work and focusing on your strengths you hope it comes off more often than not,” said Kerr in the post-match interviews.

“When the bowlers had the ball in their hand, the slower balls and the yorkers, it was outstanding. Pleasing to see all three facets put together. It is about putting repeated performances together and to keep that consistency going,” added Kerr.

Proteas skipper Laura Wolvaardt reflected on a difficult day for the tourists.

“Definitely not our best day. All credit to New Zealand. They outplayed us in all aspects. The way we started both innings did not help,” said Wolvaardt in the post-match chat.

“They had plans and they nailed them. We mis-executed today - we will have some good chats tomorrow and get better. We have a couple of days to reset,” added Wolvaardt.
