Bangladesh vs Ireland Predictions

Bangladesh comes into this series on the back of a 1-0 series defeat to Sri Lanka. Ireland have won their last three Tests, but against lower-ranked Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, so I’m backing Bangladesh to bank a win in this Test.

Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto has scored seven Test centuries in 70 innings (ave 31.19).
Ireland’s Andy Balbirnie has scored five half-centuries in his 20 Test innings.
Ireland’s Andy McBrine scored 90* off 132 balls in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Head-to-Head

Bangladesh won the only previous Test between the two sides, back in 2023. Bangladesh dominated the match, winning by seven wickets. Ireland lost their first seven Test matches, but have won their last three (Afghanistan once, Zimbabwe twice). Bangladesh have become a lot more competitive as a Test nation but are struggling to put wins together: they have won just eight Tests since 2020.

Bangladesh suffered their second defeat in four Tests when they lost to Sri Lanka by an innings and 78 runs in June.

Bangladesh got off to a shaky start but never fully recovered, scoring 247 in their first innings before Sri Lanka racked up 458 ahead of rolling Bangladesh for 133 to wrap up a innings-plus victory.

Bangladesh’s top score in the match was Shadman Islam’s 46, on the back of his scores of 120 & 76 in the previous two Test. Mushfiqur Rahim was the best batter across both innings (35 & 26) in the 2nd Test, having starred with the bat in the previous two Tests, scoring 40, 163 & 49.

Taijul Islam starred with the ball in that 2nd Test defeat, taking 5/131 on the back of figures of 6/60 and 3/42 against Zimbabwe at Chattogram.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy has been called-up as the only change from the previous Test series against Sri Lanka.

Ireland Form

Ireland made it three wins on the bounce when they beat Zimbabwe by 63 runs in February.

Andy McBrine was Player of the Match after his innings stabilising 90*, adding figures of 3/59 and 1/69 with the ball. Andy Balbirnie top-scored with 66 in the second innings, and comes into the match on the back of whiteball scores of 50, 58 & 82* in his last three innings.

Barry McCarthy has innings figures of 3/48, 3/42 & 4/75 after his first three Tests.
