India is heavily favored for the upcoming Test series against South Africa, given their dominant home record, having won six of the last seven games against the Proteas. India displayed strong form, recently defeating the West Indies comprehensively, aided by strong performances from batters like Shubman Gill. Meanwhile, South Africa enters after a confidence-boosting series against Pakistan. The team is keeping an eye on pitch conditions, which may influence their strategy. Predictions lean towards India's continued dominance, with players like Shubman Gill and Tony de Zorzi poised to lead in runs.

India vs South Africa Predictions

India are overwhelming favourites and it’s not surprising given the record they have over South Africa at home. Six of the last seven times they’ve won the match in India.

The Proteas are expected to challenge a bit more, but an upset win is risky. The value is certainly in the run scoring markts..

  • India have won 8 of their last 11 home Test matches.
  • India’s Shubman Gill has scored 50 & 129* in 2 of his last 3 Test innings.
  • India have won 6 of their last 7 home Test matches against South Africa (1 draw).
  • South Africa won their last Test match on the sub-continent (vs Pakistan).
  • South Africa’s Tony de Zorzi has scored 104 & 55 runs in the 1st innings of his last 2 Tests.

Head to Head

South Africa lead India 3-2 in their last five Test matches but India have dominated the last two series at home against the Proteas.

India Form

India annihilated the West Indies in a two-match home series at the start of October. They won the first Test by an innings and 140 runs and the second by seven wickets.

Batting first in the second Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 175 runs, Sai Sudharsan 87 and Shubman Gill 129 in a 518-run total. Kuldeep Yadav was key in India’s bowling, taking 5-82 as the Windies were all out for 248. The visitors were better in the follow-on, scoring 390 runs.

That left India with a 121-run target. KL Rahul scored 58 as India went on to win by seven wickets.

India Injuries & Team News

Rishabh Pant is back from injury after missing the last series. Dhruv Jurel did very well behind the stumps, so it will be interesting to see what happens there. The rest of the team is pretty settled.

South Africa Form

South Africa come into this series after gaining some confidence in a 1-1 series draw against Pakistan last month. After losing the first test by 92 runs, South Africa won the second by eight wickets in Rawalpindi.

Bowling first, Keshav Maharaj took 7-102 as Pakistan were all out for 333 runs. Tristan Stubbs scored a hardworking 76 while Tony de Zorzi managed 44, Senuran Muthusamy 89* and Kagiso Rabada a best ever 71 in a total of 404.

That 70-run lead proved decisive as the pitch began to deteriorate. Simon Harmer stood up to take 6-50 in the second innings, dismissing Pakistan for 138 runs. Aiden Markram’s 42 from 45 balls ensured South Africa raced to the 73 runs required to win.

South Africa Injuries & Team News

Much depends on the pitch for this match. South Africa recently deployed three spinners against Pakistan, but they may revert to two, depending on conditions. Eden Gardens may well offer the quicks some assistance in the first couple of days, but spin will almost certainly take over from day three, if not late on day two.

Captain, Temba Bavuma has returned from injury and scored some runs in an SA A game against India A recently.

Verdict

I am backing Shubman Gill and Tony de Zorzi to top score in the first innings for their respective sides. Gill to score 50+ in the first innings also holds value.
