New Zealand vs West Indies Predictions

New Zealand have been in superb red-ball form, while the West Indies have struggled to hold their own. They got lucky in the 1st Test through injuries to two New Zealand bowlers, but their middle order really rose to the occasion in the fourth innings to force a draw. New Zealand should still be favoured to take the win at home.

  • New Zealand’s Tom Latham has scored 52, 23, 24 & 145 in his last 4 innings.
  • New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra scored 176 off 185 balls in the second innings of the 1st Test.
  • West Indies’ Shai Hope has scored 109*, 56 & 140 in his last 4 innings.
  • West Indies’ Justin Greaves scored 202 off 388 balls in the second innings.

Head-to-Head

New Zealand have won four and drawn one of their last five Tests against the West Indies.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand’s run of three Test wins in a row ended with the drawn 1st Test against the West Indies.

Kane Williamson top-scored with 52 off 102 balls in the first innings as New Zealand were bowled out for 231. Tom Latham (145) and Rachin Ravindra (176) were the backbone of their second innings score of 466/8.

In a tough match for the New Zealand bowlers, Jacob Duffy was the leading wicket-taker in either innings, taking 5/34 and 3/122. Matt Henry took 3/43 and 1/29 in the match.

West Indies Form

West Indies ended their dreadful losing streak of five defeats on the trot by holding out for a draw in the 1st Test against New Zealand.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul (52 off 169) and Shai Hope (56 off 107) were the only batters to pass 14 in the West Indies’ first innings of 167. They were facing defeat at 277/6 before the monumental stand of 194 for the seventh wicket between Shai Hope (140 off 234) and Justin Greaves (202* off 388).

Kemar Roach was the West Indies bowler in the match, taking 2/47 and 5/78. Ojay Shields returned figures of 2/44 and 2/74.

New Zealand & West Indies Team News

New Zealand will be without key bowlers Matt Henry (calf), Nathan Smith (side strain) and Mitchell Santner (groin) for the remaining two Tests of the series against the West Indies. Seam-bowling allrounder Kristian Clarke (uncapped) has been drafted into the squad, along with the experienced Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell.

New Zealand squad: Tom Latham (c), Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Hay (w), Michael Bracewell, Zak Foulkes, Jacob Duffy, Blair Tickner, Michael Rae, Kristian Clarke.

The West Indies are likely to field the same side for the 2nd Test after earning a credible draw.

"Test cricket is a massive step up from first-class cricket in the Caribbean. It's a lot more demanding both physically and mentally. This is where I always wanted to be - so I had to change the way I train, both strength-and-conditioning and skill-wise. Enjoying it, learning as I go along,” said West Indies’ 1st Test batting hero Justin Greaves.

Verdict

I am backing New Zealand to win. I am also backing Tom Latham to top score for New Zealand.

Shai Hope is a good bet to top score for the West Indies.
