New Zealand vs West Indies Predictions
New Zealand have dominated the West Indies, whose batting has been woeful with the exception of the second innings of the 1st Test. The West Indies have bowled well to blunt the New Zealand top-order in all but one innings in the series, but without enough support from their batters they have little chance of securing a win.
- New Zealand’s Devon Conway has scored 56, 47*, 49, 90, 37, 60 & 28* in his last 9 innings.
- New Zealand’s Kane Williamson has scored 52, 37 & 16* in his 4 innings in the series.
- West Indies’ Shai Hope has scored 109*, 56, 140, & 47 in his last 6 innings.
- West Indies’ Justin Greaves has scored 202* & 25 in his last 3 innings.
Head-to-Head
New Zealand have won four and drawn one of their last five Tests against the West Indies.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand made it four wins from their last five Tests when they beat the West Indies by nine wickets.
New Zealand’s batters have struggled to impose themselves in this series, aside from the second innings of the 1st Test, when Tom Latham (145) and Rachin Ravindra (176) piled on the runs.
Devon Conway and Kane Williamson have shown the greatest consistency, albeit both failing to kick on to major innings. Jacob Duffy has been their shining light with the ball, picking up eight wickets in the 1st Test and six in the 2nd Test.
West Indies Form
The West Indies slipped to their fourth defeat in five Tests, along with one draw. Their bowling is highly competitive but it’s their batting that is holding them back from being truly competitive in Test cricket.
Shai Hope is the West Indies’ batting talisman in white- and red-ball cricket, scoring 56, 140, 47 and 5 in his four innings in the series. Aside from Justin Greaves’ 202* in the 1st Test, only Tagenarine Chanderpaul (52) and Kemar Roach (58*) have passed 50 for the West Indies.
Roach has been one of their stars with the ball, returning figures of 2/47, 5/78 and 2/43, putting him second behind Duffy for the most wickets in the series. Ojay Shields performed well in the 1st Test, taking 2/34 and 2/74.
New Zealand and West Indies Team News
Ajaz Patel has been recalled to the Test squad and could play his first Test in over a year. Kiwi keeper Tom Blundell returns after recovering from a hamstring tear and takes the place of Mitchell Hay, who scored 61 on his Test debut in the 2nd Test. Paceman Blair Tickner will be missing after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the 2nd Test.
"Ajaz is someone we can trust to come in and do a job if required. Bay Oval, as we know, has typically taken more turn than other surfaces around New Zealand, and the fact he turns the ball away from the right-hander is very appealing," said New Zealand head coach Rob Walter.
"Taking another spinner into the 3rd Test also gives a bit more variance in our bowling attack, along with our seamers who have been doing a great job thus far this series."
"The last time we won in New Zealand was in 1995, so we want to leave here with a win," said West Indies skipper Roston Chase. "We still think that we are capable enough to get a win, but it's just for us to be consistent, because the bowlers have shown that they're capable of getting us those 10 wickets or 20 wickets that we need to get."
New Zealand squad: Tom Latham (capt), Tom Blundell (wk), Michael Bracewell, Kristian Clarke, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Daryl Mitchell, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Michael Rae, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson, Will Young.
West Indies squad: Roston Chase (c), Jomel Warrican (vc), Alick Athanaze, John Campbell, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, Brandon King, Johann Layne, Anderson Phillip, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Ojay Shields.
Verdict
I am backing New Zealand to win. I am also backing Devon Conway to top score for New Zealand, with Jacob Duffy to be their top bowler.
Shai Hope is a good bet to top score for the West Indies.
