With eight races, Greyville offers plenty of opportunities for backing strong favourites, although there are a couple of tight races.

Race 1 – Barry's Boy (6)

Jockey: Callan Murray

Trainer: L. V. Woodruff

The 4-yr-old bay gelding Barry's Boy has taken a while to find his feet but things are definitely looking up. After debuting with a 5/10 place a year ago he was given a 108-day break, then came back with an apprenticeship of 8-6-6-6-7 finishes, followed by a 112-day break and a change of ownership.

The rest and change worked and Barry's Boy came back with 3/8 and 2/8 finishes in May and June. He’s had a 61-day break so he should be firing for the line. Cartel Queen (5-3-5-2-6) and Donmagoo (4-4-4-3-4) are his closest likely competitors.

Race 3 – That's A Gimme (5)

Jockey: Callan Murray

Trainer: J. S. Snaith

That's A Gimme has had a stuttering start to her three-race career. The 3-yr-old bay filly came second-last and last in her first two runs, but a 116-day break saw her finish mid-field (fourth) mid-July. She looks a strong runner and could be in the perfect place for hitting a first win, with only Chooks Kiss (2-5-3-2) looking like a likely challenger for the tape.

Race 6 – Kythera (2)

Jockey: Serino Moodley

Trainer: W. A. Nel

Kalahari Roller is on a stormer, finishing 2-3-3-2-2 in his last five outings. The 5-yr-old bay gelding has three career wins and a total of 13 Top 3 spots in his 24 starts, so he’ll be there in the photo finish analysis. Rainbow Reward is also in good form, with finishes of 5-1-3-1-3, as is Blazing Fury (2-5-2-1).

I’m backing Kythera, who has had extensive breaks between each race (sometimes two) of her 11-race career. The 6-yr-old bay mare last ran 99 days ago, placing third but running a powerful run and finishing on the winner’s tail. Two career wins give me confidence that, while she’s not prolific, she sure has a turn of speed that can turn heads.

Race 8 – Red Coral (2)

Jockey: G Lerena

Trainer: C. Bass

The final run of the day looks set up for Red Coral to take the tape in a field lacking form and high-place finishes. Poursomesugaronme has run 4-3-2-8-5 and Autumn Rush won her second-last race but her last five have seen her place 4-5-7-1-11, so I’m short on confidence in her.

Red Coral is a fiery 4-yr-old bay filly with 36-day of rest behind her, along with a first career win a year ago and a good run into this meeting (2-8-2-2-4). She put in a strong run in her last race, pushing the leader for much of the race before slipping to fourth in a tight finish, so I’m keen to back her take a second career win.
