At the PSL awards in May, Mamelodi Sundowns unsurprisingly dominated. Not only did central midfielder Teboho Mokoena win Footballer of the Season, but his teammate Cassius Mailula won Young Player of the Year.

Goalkeeper of the year went to Downs’ Ronwen Williams and Rhulani Mokwena from the Brazilians took coach of the year. It didn’t stop there as Khuliso Mudau was crowned defender of the year) and striker Peter Shalulile shared the top scorer award with Cape Town City’s Khanyisa Mayo

Orlando Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng received the Players’ Player of the Year award as he netted 15 goals and assisted another 11 across all competitions.

Five Good Value Contenders For Next Season

1. Ronwen Williams

It’s rare for a goalkeeper to take this award but having kept 18 clean sheets in 26 matches last season, Williams is a genuine candidate this time around. The big question is whether he can maintain his form and take his game to another level.

2. Neo Maema

The Sundowns midfielder got five league goals last season and was key down the left side of the engine room. This term, he could receive international recognition and if he can score more goals, he could be amongst the Football of the Season reckoning.

3. Ashley Du Preez

The Kaizer Chiefs speed merchant got nine goals in his first campaign at the club. He moved from a wide role to playing as striker around January and never looked back. If he can stay fit, he could hit double figures for league goals and fire Amakhosi towards a CAF Champions League spot.

4. Terrence Dzvukamanja

After scoring eight goals in 19 outings last season for Orlando Pirates, the attacker has moved to SuperSport United. Considering he netted six headed goals last term, he should thrive under Gavin Hunt’s crossing game.

5. Thembinkosi Lorch

Despite his off-field problems, both with the law and on the injury front, Lorch remains Pirates’ best player. If he can finally shake off the injuries, we may see the player who won Footballer of the Season back in the 2018-19 campaign. He should dovetail well with Monnapule Saleng and Lesedi Kapinga in attack.

PSL Footballer of the Season Odds

This information is yet to be released. The usual candidates like Peter Shalulile (Mamelodi Sundowns) and Monnapule Saleng (Orlando Pirates) will be the favourites with the bookies.
