This is an intriguing battle in the first semi-final. Earlier this season Boland beat the Lions 29-10 in Paarl, but the Lions have not lost at home all season. Boland have only managed one victory away, so I am certainly leaning towards the hosts.

The season started strong for the Lions with comfortable wins in the opening two games before they lost 29-10 away to Boland. They bounce back with a one-point victory over the Pumas away but then lost 47-31 to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

The final two weeks, when their top four spot was in jeopardy, the Golden Lions came to the party with two big wins. They beat the Bulls 44-5 at home before thrashing Griquas 37-7 last weekend to secure top spot.

Boland has enjoyed a very strong return to the top division of the Currie Cup, secure a top four finish and a semi-final berth. What may be a bit concerning is their drop in performance over the last few weeks.

Boland were in for a top spot finish with two matches to play and certainly a home semi-final. However, this season still stands out for them given that they still finished fourth.

After an impressive victory away to the Pumas in round five, Boland lost 33-31 away to the Sharks. Last week, they lost 40-22 away to Western Province. It is worth noting that those two teams finished as the bottom sides on the table.
