Sale were superb last season while Gloucester were well below expectations. However, they have both won one and lost one in the opening two rounds of this season.

The hosts are favourites but given Gloucester’s form last week on the road, I fancy them to get within seven.

Head to Head

Sale Sharks have won two of their last three matches against Gloucester. The last time they met in January this year, it was Gloucester who came out on top, winning 32-20.

Sale Form

Sale have enjoyed a good couple of seasons, reaching the final in 2022/23 and the semi-final in 2023/24. They will be looking for another strong top four finish this year.

The season has, however, not begun like the Sharks would have wished. In round one, they narrowly escaped at home, beating Harlequins 12-11 in a very scrappy contest.

This past weekend, the Sharks went down at Saracens 45-26. Defensively Sale were found wanting on numerous occasions while their attack also wasn’t as fluent.

At half time, Sale lead 13-12 but their discipline slipped in the second half, conceding a total of seven penalties. Saracens only scored one try more that Sale, so that tells you how much poor discipline was on offer.

Sam Dugdale was red carded against Saracens, so he won’t feature this weekend. Other than that, the Sharks are unlikely to make many changes.

Gloucester Form

Gloucester began their season with a 35-26 home defeat to Saracens a fortnight ago. While it wasn’t unexpected, losing at home is never ideal.

After a few decent seasons, Gloucester were poor last season. They will want to show big improvement this year.

Last weekend, Gloucester bounced back away from home to cause a stunning 44-41 win at Bristol. It was a superb game of rugby and Gloucester’s second half showing was made for one of the best games in recent memory.
