New Zealand vs Argentina Preview & Tips

Argentina have the physical attributes to challenge New Zealand far more than the Australians did. The All Blacks should have too much class but Los Pumas are backed to get within 23 points.

  • New Zealand have won their last 6 matches.
  • Argentina have not lost by more than 22 points in 4 of their last 5 matches against New Zealand.
  • Argentina are unbeaten in 6 of their last 9 matches.

Head to Head

New Zealand have won 29 of their 31 previous matches against Argentina. Until last year, the best result Argentina could manage was a 21-21 draw in 1985.

During the Tri Nations in 2020, Argentina got their first ever win (25-15) over the All Blacks. New Zealand bounced back to win 38-0 the following week.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand are unbeaten in 2021 and are top of the Rugby Championship table at the moment. After two matches they have 10 points, one point ahead of South Africa.

Over the last month New Zealand have regained the Bledisloe Cup for the 18th consecutive year. They beat Australia 33-25 in the first match and it only got better from there.

The second fixtures against the Wallabies doubled up as the opening Rugby Championship match. New Zealand thrashed Australia 57-22.

Last week New Zealand continued their fine form, winning 38-21 against Australia. It was another commanding performance but most of their opportunities came through poor Aussie errors.

New Zealand Team News

Loose forward Ardie Savea and hooker Codie Taylor have both been ruled out of this match due to concussion. Brodie Retallick will captain the side.

Hurricanes hooker, Asafo Aumua will make his first start in the black jersey at hooker.

Argentina Form

Argentina came within a whisker of upsetting all the odds by winning the Rugby Championship last season. Unfortunately their last result, a 38-0 defeat to New Zealand cost them that opportunity.

Regardless, Los Pumas have had a very good 12 months. They drew twice against Australia last year and got their first ever win against the All Blacks.

This season hasn’t started as well. Argentina lost both their opening Rugby Championship matches to the world champions, South Africa.

The first match saw the Springboks win 32-12 and the second 29-10. Argentina were poor in both fixtures but will hope to regain some of their 2020 form this weekend.

Argentina Team News

Nicolas Sanchez returns to flyhalf in place of Domingo Miotti. Santiago Carreras who played in both matches against South Africa has been ruled out with a calf injury.
