We enter the second week of the Autumn Nations Series, otherwise known as the Quilter Nations Series, with some cracking fixtures ahead. Match Previews & Betting Odds
Italy vs South Africa
Italy come into this fixture after a very impressive display last weekend against Australia where they won 26-19 - a second successive victory over the Wallabies. South Africa on the other hand beat France 32-17 and played 30 minutes of the match with only 14 men.
The current handicap (Tuesday, 11 November) has South Africa favourites with the handicap set at 22.5 points. Given the Italians impressive form and South Africa's likelihood of making several changes to their side, the clever money is probably on the hosts at the moment - in the handicap market, I do not see them overturning the four-time world champions in Turin.
England vs New Zealand
This match is probably the match of the weekend, although a couple others will look to claim that title. England are playing well at the moment with 10 wins on the spin, but the All Blacks will be no easy beats as they chase the Grand Slam.
The All Blacks have not been perfect at all. They were largely outplayed by Ireland in the first 60 minutes a fortnight ago but came good in the last quarter. Last week, against Scotland, they raced into a 17-0 half time lead, but Scotland hit back to bring it to 17-17. Again, the All Blacks bench proved the difference to secure the win.
However, this is a close one to call, England are favourites by the slightest of margins with the handicap at 1.5 currently (Tuesday, 11 November). At this point, I wouldn't risk a bet until the teams are announced.
Wales vs Japan
Wales atrocious form continued last week when they lost 52-28 at home to Argentina. Japan were competitive for last parts against Ireland but did eventually lose 41-10. These two met in Japan in July this year, a two-match series that was shared 1-1.
The Welsh did look to have some attacking prowess back in their attack last week but defensively they are still vulnerable. Japan's fast rucks will be a major concern for Steve Tandy and his coaching staff.
The handicap is currently (Tuesday, 11 November) set at 12.5 with Wales as favourites but this could get tight. I do, however, think at home that Wales will be a bit too strong.
France vs Fiji
France will be smarting after their loss to 14-man South Africa last Saturday night. It was billed as a revenge game after the Springboks knocked France out of their home World Cup in 2023 - unfortunately for Les Bleus the result did not go their way.
Fiji were largely impressive against England but they did run out of steam. I wouldn't be biting at the 23.5 handicap currently in play as this game will be decided by team selection. France should have enough firepower to win regardless, but the line may be too high if the hosts make wholesale changes.
Ireland vs Australia
Another contender for match of the weekend. This has the ability to be a very tight contest but neither side is playing particularly well at the moment. Ireland have struggled to get much fluency in their game while Australia looked a shell of the side last weekend when compared to the Rugby Championship.
Could it be that the Wallabies have just ran out of gas this year? Unlike other Southern Hemisphere nations, they have had a tough year with the British & Irish Lions in July.
The handicap (Tuesday, 11 November) is set at 10.5 points with Ireland as favourites. My first thought was that is too steep, but then if you look at Australia's performances over the last three weeks against Japan, England and Italy - Ireland are probably good value to cover that line.
Scotland vs Argentina
This game has the real potential to be match of the weekend on Sunday evening. Scotland took New Zealand to the brink last weekend while Argentina, who have already beaten Australia and New Zealand this year, saw off Wales, scoring 52 points in the process.
The Scots are slight favourites with the handicap currently (Tuesday, 11 November) at 1.5. But, after an emotional rollercoaster last weekend against New Zealand, can Scotland pick themselves up to go again? Conversely, can Argentina, who are notoriously, albeit not in 2025, inconsistent - upset the odds at Murrayfield?
This is one game, along with England vs New Zealand, that I have no clue which way to go. I'm not sure the team announcements will help either with this one, but let's wait and see. Cracking contest awaits regardless.
This Weekends Best Bets (15/16 November)
With some cracking fixtures this weekend, it is a tough call which games I am more confident about. But here is my best guess...for now. Let's have a look if anything changes when the teams are announced.
Italy +22.5 vs South Africa @ 1.90.
England to cover -1.5 vs New Zealand @ 1.90.
Ireland vs Australia to see over 47.5 points @ 1.90.
Scotland vs Argentina and France vs Fiji is too games I'm steering clear of this weekend while Wales vs Japan may be something to look at closer to kick off.
