Western Force vs Rebels Predictions
The Rebels will be eager to put right their two narrow losses so far this Super Rugby AU campaign. However, the Force are no pushovers, so my best bet for this clash is for the Rebels to be on the right side of a very close scoreline.
- Western Force have lost their last 5 home matches in Super Rugby AU.
- Rebels have won 11 of their last 15 matches against the Western Force.
- Rebels have won by a margin of 10 or less in 10 of their last 11 wins over the Western Force.
Head to Head
Rebels have an 11-4 advantage over the Western Force in their last 15 meetings.
Their last clash took place in the 2020 Super Rugby AU tournament, with the Rebels edging proceedings 34-30.
Western Force Form
The Western Force have already showed great improvement on their 2020 Super Rugby AU performance. The signings made in the off season will continue to improve the squad the more they play together.
On the opening weekend the Force lost 27-11 to the Brumbies. The scoreline does not tell the full tale as the Western Force dominated periods of the match. Their inability to finish chances off cost them in the end.
After a bye in the second week, the Western Force won 20-16 at the Waratahs last weekend. It was a struggle against a young Tahs’ outfit but it was testament to the quality in their ranks that the Force pulled through.
Western Force Injuries & Team News
There are not many changes to the Western Force starting side. Ryan McCauley will come in for his first start of the season while there are new faces on the bench.
Young hooker, Jack Winchester returns to the squad after missing out against the Waratahs. Samoan centre Henry Tadeful and the versatile Jack McGregor are also on the bench looking to make their first appearance of the season.
Rebels Form
Strangely the Rebels will be both buoyed and very disappointed with their start to Super Rugby AU. They enjoyed a bye on the first weekend but have lost their subsequent two matches.
Neither defeat will be easy to take but the matches were both away from home against the strongest two sides in the competition. Against the Reds, the Rebels lost out in the dying moments of the match and much the same happened against the Brumbies last week.
After outplaying the Brumbies for most of the match, the Rebels allowed the hosts to sneak away with a 27-24 victory with the final kick of the match. It could easily have been two victories from their opening two matches had decision gone their way.
The one major concern for the Rebels will be their lack of attacking threat. In neither match have they managed to score a try, rather relying on Matt To’omua’s boot to get the points.
Rebels Injuries & Team News
Rebels coach, Dave Wessels has named an unchanged starting lineup. There was concern around prop, Pone Fa’amausili after going off last week but he has been passed fit.
Matt To’omua has been flying this season and has 42 points after two matches. Last week he kicked a club record 8 from 8 penalties.
