Egypt vs Benin Predictions - Salah to drive Egypt into the quarterfinals of AFCON

In the upcoming AFCON clash, Egypt is set to face Benin. Despite a less-than-stellar performance in the tournament so far, Egypt remains undefeated mainly due to Mohamed Salah's contributions. With Egypt having won their last three encounters against Benin by more than two goals, Salem Salah's presence could again prove decisive. Meanwhile, Benin, while showing determination, have struggled against stronger teams. Egypt is expected to leverage their historical dominance and recent form to secure a win in this crucial match-up.

Egypt vs Benin Predictions

Egypt have been decent but not all that convincing while Benin have certainly played above themselves. I expect a tight contest but ultimately, Salah could prove the difference.

  • Egypt have won 3 of their last 4 matches.
  • Egypt have kept clean sheets in their last 2 matches.
  • Egypt’s Mohamed Salah has scored in his last 2 matches.
  • Egypt have won by 2+ goals in their last 3 matches against Benin.
  • Benin have lost to nil in 4 of their last 5 matches.

Head to Head

Egypt lead 3-0 in their four matches against Benin. This dominance is likely to continue in this round of 16 clash.

Egypt Form

Egypt have been underperforming at the Africa Cup of Nations but find themselves undefeated and in the Round of 16.

The Pharaohs fell behind against Zimbabwe before turning it around, Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah scoring to secure a 2-1 victory. They ended with 78% possession, 35-8 shots and 2.93-0.35 xG to highlight their dominance.

Salah scored again to give Hossam Hassan’s side the lead against South Africa. Mohamed Hany was sent off before half-time but they held on to secure a 1-0 win in Agadir.

Egypt were ineffective in their final group game, a 0-0 draw against Angola. Hassan made mass changes as they registered just two shots on target and 0.62 xG, the point enough to secure top spot in Group B.

Egypt Predicted Lineup & News

Egypt (4-3-3) Mohamed El Shenawy; Mohamed Hany, Yasser Ibrahim, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Hamdy; Marwan Attia, Hamdy Fathy, Emam Ashour; Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush, Mahmoud Trezeguet

Mohamed Hany is available after suspension and should return at right-back. Ramy Rabia and Hossam Abdelmaguid compete for a spot in central defence.

Mohanad Lasheen suffered a rib contusion against Angola and is doubtful. Expect Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush and Mahmoud Trezeguet to lead the line.

Benin Form

Benin went close in their opening match at AFCON, a 1-0 defeat to DR Congo. They ended with 60% possession and 12-11 shots but failed to take their chances.

Gernot Rohr welcomed a number of players back from suspension against Botswana. They made it count, Steve Mounie assisting Yohan Roche in a 1-0 victory.

The Cheetahs were outclassed in their final group game, a 3-0 loss against Senegal. Playing against 10 men for the final 20 minutes, they ended with 0.76 xG but did enough to stay alive at the tournament.

Benin Predicted Lineup & News

Benin (4-2-3-1) Marcel Dandjinou; Tamimou Ouorou, Olivier Verdon, Mohamed Tijani, Yohan Roche; Sessi Dalmeida, Imourane Hassane; Aiyegun Tosin, Dodo Dokou, Junior Olaitan; Steve Mounie

Sessi Dalmeida has been battling a hamstring but should come back into the starting side. Rachid Moumini is suspended with Tamimou Ouorou expected to continue at right-back.

Steve Mounie has fitness concerns but should continue to lead the line.

Verdict

Egypt have been below their best at the Africa Cup of Nations but have only conceded one goal. I am expecting some improvement against Benin, Mohamed Salah to fire the Pharaohs to victory in Agadir.
