The Gambia qualified for the AFCON by topping their qualification group ahead of Gabon. They won three and drew one of their final four qualifiers.

The Gambians played a number of friendly fixtures since the AFCON qualification finished. They beat both Niger and Togo but then lost to Kosovo and New Zealand.

While they came into the Africa Cup of Nations a bit undercooked, The Gambia managed to get a 1-0 win over Mauritania in the opener. Ablie Jallow struck in the 10th minute but The Gambia could easily have won by more.

The Gambia are unlikely to change much after getting the three points last time out. They will want to be more accurate in the attacking third though and improved finishing will be required.

Mali came into the tournament having not played since mid-November when the World Cup Qualifying campaign ended. Their only friendly against Malawi was cancelled.

During the Qatar 2022 qualifying campaign Mali were unbeaten, they won five and drew one of their six matches. were superb. Most impressive is perhaps the fact that Mali didn’t concede a goal in those six fixtures.

In their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations, Mali put any rust they may have had aside to beat a strong Tunisia outfit 1-0. Ibrahima Kone scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot. The one blemish was the red card for El Bilal Toure.
