Nigeria started AFCON with a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea despite having 19-7 shots. They cruised into the knockout rounds after 1-0 victories against Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau.

The Super Eagles kept a third straight clean sheet in the Round of 16, beating Cameroon 2-0. They were dominant defensively, Ademola Lookman scoring in both halves.

Lookman scored again in a 1-0 quarter-final win against Angola, Victor Osimhen taking a team high four shots on target.

José Peseiro’s side snuck past South Africa in the semi-finals. William Troost-Ekong gave them the lead, they conceded a 90th minute penalty before winning the shootout.

Ivory Coast started the Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 win against Guinea-Bissau. They then lost 1-0 to Nigeria and 4-0 against Equatorial Guinea but snuck into the Round of 16.

The Elephants trailed Senegal 1-0 with time running out, Franck Kessié’s late spot kick took it to extra time before they won the penalty shootout.

Emerse Faé’s side were involved in a fantastic quarter-final clash against Mali after Yahia Fofana saved an early penalty. Odilon Kossounou was sent off before they fell 1-0 behind, Simon Adingra equalising in the 90th minute and Oumar Diakité scoring deep into extra time.

Ivory Coast defeated DR Congo 1-0 in the semi-finals. Sébastien Haller made the most of his first start, converting in the 65th minute.
