In what promises to be an exhilarating match at the Africa Cup of Nations, Senegal and Egypt will square off in a contest where both teams are looking strong. Senegal has been mostly undefeated in recent matches, posing a cohesive unit. Egypt, while not at its best, has relied heavily on Mohamed Salah to secure key wins. As both teams prepare for this clash, extra time seems likely unless one can break the deadlock early. Predictors suggest a possible 1-1 draw, pointing out the resilience of both sides.

Head to Head

The h2h stats are dead even in this fixture. They have met 13 times, with each side winning on five occasions along with three draws.

Senegal Form

Senegal started at AFCON with a 3-0 victory over Botswana, Nicolas Jackson scoring two goals. They fell behind against DR Congo but fought back, Sadio Mane equalising in a 1-1 draw.

Pape Thiaw’s side ended the group stage with a 3-0 win against Benin, playing the final 20 minutes without Kalidou Koulibaly who was sent off.

The Lions of Teranga conceded an early goal against Sudan in the Round of 16. Pape Gueye scoring twice before half-time and Ibrahim Mbaye came off the bench to wrap up a 3-1 victory.

Senegal had few problems in the quarter-finals, Iliman Ndiaye’s goal enough to earn a 1-0 win over Mali. They played the entire second half against 10 men but still allowed 1.05 xG in the final 45 minutes.

Senegal Predicted Lineup & News

Senegal (4-3-3) Edouard Mendy; Krepin Diatta, Kalidou Koulibaly, Moussa Niakhate, Ismail Jakobs; Habib Diarra, Idrissa Gueye, Pape Gueye; Iliman Ndiaye, Habib Diallo, Sadio Mane

Iliman Ndiaye started in attack against Mali and rewarded Pape Thiaw with the winning goal.

Nicolas Jackson remained on the bench throughout, Cherif Ndiaye replacing Habib Diallo in the second half.

Egypt Form

Egypt have been below their best at the Africa Cup of Nations but keep finding ways to win, largely due to Mohamed Salah. They fell behind against Zimbabwe before Omar Marmoush and Salah scored in a 2-1 victory.

Salah scored to give the Pharaohs the lead against South Africa, holding on for a 1-0 win after Mohamed Hany was sent off before half-time. The group stage ended with a 0-0 draw against Angola, registering just two shots on target and 0.62 xG.

Hossam Hassan’s side were taken to extra time by Benin in the Round of 16. Their superior quality came to the fore, Yasser Ibrahim and Mohamed Salah scoring to secure a 3-1 victory.

Egypt were involved in an entertaining 3-2 win against Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals. Marmoush and Salah scored in the victory as they ended with 29% possession and 6-13 shots.

Egypt Predicted Lineup & News

Egypt (3-4-1-2) Mohamed El Shenawy; Yasser Ibrahim, Hossam Abdelmaguid, Ramy Rabia; Mohamed Hany, Marwan Attia, Hamdy Fathy, Ahmed Abou El Fotouh; Emam Ashour; Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush

Mohamed Hamdy suffered an ACL rupture against Benin with Ahmed Abou El Fotouh to continue at left-back.

Mohanad Lasheen suffered a rib contusion against Angola and remains doubtful. Mahmoud Trezeguet might have to settle for another spot on the bench.

Verdict

Egypt have hardly impressed at the Africa Cup of Nations, Mohamed Salah scoring in all four appearances to help the Pharaohs progress.

Senegal failed to put Mali away in the quarter-finals and could find themselves frustrated again, extra time on the cards in Rabat.
