Senegal vs Mozambique Preview

Senegal will be looking to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat to Namibia in their opening fixture. They face a Mozambique side struggling for confidence at the moment and my best bet is for the West Africans to claim a slim victory.

  • Senegal are unbeaten in six of their last seven matches
  • Senegal have won two of their last three matches.
  • Senegal have kept clean sheets in their last two matches against Mozambique
  • Mozambique have lost four of their last five matches
  • Mozambique have failed to score in their last four matches.

Head to Head

Senegal have never lost to Mozambique, claiming a win and a draw from two previous matches. They have also never conceded a goal against the Mozambicans.

Senegal Form

Senegal suffered a 2-1 defeat to Namibia in their first ever outing at the COSAFA Cup. The fell behind early in the contest but struck back quickly through Albert Diene before conceding the winner five minutes after the restart.

It was the first defeat in six matches for the West Africans, who are playing as guests in this year’s COSAFA Cup. Despite the defeat,  Senegal are still considered one of the favorites to win the regional competition and are expected to make amends for their opening day loss.

The Teranga Lions claimed two wins prior to the defeat against Namibia. They defeated Zambia 3-1 before beating Cape Verde 2-0.

Senegal Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Khassim Diop, Pape Seydou N’diaye
Defenders: Pape Djitte, Falilou Fall, Alfred Gomis, Mouhamed Ndiaye, Pape Ndoye, Woula Sane
Midfielders: Makhmouth Diallo, El Hadji Kane, Dominique Mendy, Abdou Seydi
Attackers: Mohamed Ba, Albert Diene, Souabou Gningue, Seringue Gueye, Alioune Mbaye, Abdoul Ndoye, Baba Sow, Abou Diop

There are no injuries or suspensions in the Senegal squad.

Manager Joseph Koto is likely to keep faith with the same team that started against Namibia. Albert Diene should retain his place in attack following his goal last time out.

He is likely to be joined in attack by Mohamed Ba and Abou Diop who will be hoping for better luck in front of goal after missing several chances against Namibia.

Mozambique Form

Mozambique began their campaign at the COSAFA Cup with a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe. They made a bright start with Estevao Novela and Abel Nhantumbo missing early chances but were unable to sustain their early pressure and were second best for much of the contest.

The result means Horacio Gonçalvez's men are now winless in their last six matches, stretching back to November. They have suffered four defeats in that run, including back to back 1-0 losses to Rwanda and Cape Verde in March.

Mozambique have been poor in front of goal lately and have failed to score in their last four matches.

Mozambique Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Ernan Siluane, Victor Guambe
Defenders: Cigano, Francisco Simbine, Danilo, Martinho, Pelembe, Macaime
Midfielders: Shaquille, Abel Nhantumbo, Candinho, Jesus, Salas, Nilton, Mapangane
Attackers: Dilson, Vitinho, Mare, Estevao Novela

Mozambique have a fully fit squad ahead of Friday’s clash. Following the clean sheet against Zimbabwe, manager Horacio Gonçalvez is likely to keep faith the back four that started their opening fixture.

Candinho and Abel Nhantumbo are likely to feature in midfield while Estevao Novela should continue in attack as he looks to make amends for his misses in the opening fixture.

Verdict

Mozambique have plenty of problems at the moment, particularly in attack and are likely to struggle against Senegal. The West Africans are expected to improve on their opening day performance  and should claim the win here.

Best Bet: Senegal to win
Value Bet: Senegal win to nil
Correct Score Tip: Senegal to win 1-0
