Newcastle vs Arsenal Predictions

Arsenal have an excellent record against Newcastle United and haven't conceded a goal in the last five meetings. But the trip north comes in between their two UEFA Europa League semi-finals against Villarreal and all eyes will be on next Thursday's crucial second leg. The Gunners' greater priorities, coupled with Newcastle's upturn in fortunes over the last month, make a draw a value bet on Sunday afternoon.

  • Newcastle are undefeated in their last 4 matches, and their last 5 home matches (Premier League).
  • Newcastle have drawn 5 of their last 8 matches (Premier League).
  • Newcastle have drawn 3 of their last 4 home matches (Premier League).
  • Newcastle have seen BTTS in their last 4 matches (Premier League).
  • Arsenal are winless in their last 3 matches (all competitions).

Head To Head

Arsenal hold an 81-67 head to head record over Newcastle. There have also been 38 draws between the sides.

It is 15 wins in the last 17 meetings for the Gunners and five clean sheets in a row against the Magpies.

The clubs met twice in January with Arsenal winning 2-0 in the FA Cup in extra time after a 0-0 draw, then winning 3-0 in the Premier League.

Newcastle Form

Newcastle have moved nine points clear of the relegation zone with two wins and two draws from the last four games for Steve Bruce's side.

A late Joe Willock equaliser earned a 2-2 draw with Tottenham, and he then got the winner in a 3-2 victory over West Ham.

Willock was also on hand with a 95th minute leveller last weekend as Newcastle took a point from a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

The Magpies have also beaten Burnley 2-1 in their recent upturn in fortunes with Allan Saint-Maximum the key man in the victory at Turf Moor.

Newcastle Team News

Callum Wilson looks set to return to the starting line up with the leading scorer having made substitute appearances since his comeback.

On loan Joe Willock is unavailable against his parent club. His absence is a blow having scored late equalisers against Tottenham and Liverpool and the winner against West Ham.

Captain and centre-back Jamaal Lascelles is out along with back up goalkeeper Karl Darlow, midfielder Issac Hayden and winger Ryan Fraser.

Centre-back Fabian Schar and full-back Matt Ritchie are also doubtful. A rejig at the back might be needed by Steve Bruce.

Arsenal Form

Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Villarreal in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final on Thursday.

Mikel Arteta's side are still in the tie after Nicolas Pepe got a crucial away goal from the penalty spot with 17 minutes remaining.

The Gunners trailed 2-0 inside the opening half-hour after Manuel Trigueros and Raul Albiol goals for the La Liga side.

It is now three games without a win for Arsenal, who drew 1-1 with Fulham following their last Europa League game.

They followed that with a 1-0 defeat at home to Everton, although it came via a howler from goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Arsenal Team News

Mikel Arteta is likely to make changes with next week's UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg in his thoughts.

Full-back Kieran Tierney and forward Alexandre Lacazette are set to be available after injuries and are likely to start.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made his comeback in the Europa League as a late substitute, but could start at St James's Park.

Willian, Mohamed Elneny, Hector Bellerin, David Luiz, Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli are all possible starters against Newcastle.

Verdict

Arsenal's priority right now is winning the UEFA Europa League, as their chances of reaching any form of European qualification through the league look highly unlikely. That should play into the hands of an improving Newcastle United outfit, who are backed to pick up another point at home on Sunday afternoon.
