Both Guinea and Botswana will have regrets about this World Cup qualifying campaign but ultimately, neither were good enough. Guinea’s recent form has, however, been good while Botswana have struggled. I’m backing the hosts to win.

Guinea will be very disappointed with how World Cup qualifying has gone for them. They would have fancied a second-place finish at the start, but they are stuck in fourth, could possibly go third, but cannot catch the top two.

After nine games, Guinea have won four, lost three and drawn two which puts them on 14 points. In September, Guinea actually got a couple of decent results, as they drew 0-0 at home against Algeria and beat Somalia 3-0.

On Thursday last week, Guinea beat Mozambique 2-1 away in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, but their earlier results in the group stage ensured this little run of good results was too little, too late.

Botswana Form

Botswana will not be too displeased with their World Cup qualifying campaign. They are fifth in the group with nine points but have overall been solid throughout.

Unfortunately, Botswana’s last three World Cup qualifiers have all ended in defeat. In September they lost 3-1 to Algeria and 2-0 to Mozambique.

In their last qualifier, last Thursday, Botswana lost 1-0 at home to Uganda. Bar the Algeria result, Botswana will be disappointed with the last two as those are both games they could have challenged more.
