Schalke play host Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Sunday evening. Schalke’s form has been very disappointing and playing at the Veltins-Arena has made little difference to their fortunes.

Schalke are in terrible form, losing seven of their last nine fixtures in all competitions.

Schalke looked a shadow of their former selves in a 4-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund, before being thumped 3-0 at home by Augsburg. A 2-1 defeat at Fortuna Dusseldorf and a 1-0 home loss to fellow strugglers Werder Bremen followed.

Their most recent match ended in a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin. Schalke managed a solitary shot on target, which happened to be Jonjoe Kenny’s equaliser in the first half.

Schalke’s form at the Veltins-Arena has been disappointing to say the least, losing four of their last five home fixtures in all competitions. Even more worrying is that they failed to score in all four defeats.

Central midfield is an issue for Schalke with Suat Serdar is out for the season and Omar Mascarell injured. Weston McKennie returns from suspension to boost their options in the middle of the pitch.

Central defenders Benjamin Stambouli and Jean-Clair Todibo are injured. Influential attacking midfielder Amine Harit is also injured alongside striker Guido Burgstaller. Fellow striker Benito Raman could make a return on Sunday.

Bayer Leverkusen still have a lot to play for this season. They have shown great form on the road this Bundesliga campaign, emerging victorious in seven of their last eight away fixtures in all competitions.

Peter Bosz’s charges claimed an impressive 3-1 win at Borussia Monchengladbach, but let complacency get the better of them in a 4-1 home thumping by Wolfsburg. The Werkself won 1-0 in Freiburg, but that was followed by a 4-2 home defeat to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen reached the German Cup final with a 3-0 victory at fourth division club Saarbrücken on Tuesday. Moussa Diaby, Lucas Alario, and Karim Bellarabi grabbed the goals.

Versatile defender Lars Bender is out with a foot injury, but centre back Jonathan Tah came off the bench at half time in Saarbrücken. Forward Kevin Volland has come off the bench in two straight matches.

Left back Daley Sinkgraven was unavailable on Tuesday. Star player Kai Havertz has missed Leverkusen’s last two matches and Karim Bellarabi was injured late at Saarbrücken.
