Did Chiefs Meet Expectations?

The expectations for Amakhosi this past season were to compete for a top four finish and qualification for continental competition. The fact that they finished 10th and didn’t even make it to next season’s MTN8 Cup means this term was way below expectations.

The trophy drought has now reached nine years as they exited the MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup and Nedbank Cup. The latter saw an exit to lower league opposition Milford FC on penalties.

Player of the Season

There were very few Chiefs players who enhanced their reputations this season. Ashley Du Preez, Keagan Dolly and Yusuf Maart were all below par.

Central defender Given Msimango was perhaps the best performer and he played the most minutes in all competitions. Goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma also excelled after coming into the XI.

Performance of the Season

Considering they won just nine matches in the league, there are not many victories to choose from. The best performances probably came early in the season.

A 3-0 home win vs AmaZulu and a 2-0 victory at Stellenbosch FC came four days apart in August. The season went downhill after that.

Best New Signing

Given Msimango joined from TS Galaxy and excelled in central defence. Pule Mmodi showed flashes of his class down the left wing having arrived from Golden Arrows. Edson Castillo started the season very well after his arrival before fading badly.

Sibongiseni Mthethwa largely struggled in midfield after a big-money transfer from Stellenbosch. Forwards Ranga Chivaviro and Jasond Gonzalez both struggled to score goals or get regular starts.

Main Areas of Improvement

There is not a single area where Chiefs don’t need to improve. With just 25 goals scored, they lacked a ruthless finisher and needed far more goals from midfield and wide areas.

At the back, there were a number of individual errors and their 30 goals conceded was the ninth-most in the division.

Upcoming Kaizer Chiefs Transfer Activity

There could be plenty of players who are allowed to depart including veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and ageing left back Sifiso Hlanti.

Keagan Dolly’s contract has just three weeks left to run and George Matlou is also on the chopping block. The main areas where signings are necessary are at left back and at centre forward. Percy Tau has been linked with a move from Al Ahly.

Overall Season Summary – Kaizer Chiefs

This season was very disappointing from Chiefs. Their finishing place in the table was very low and they again failed to win a trophy. Coach Molefi Ntseki was fired after 13 matches and Cavin Johnson didn’t do much better.

The club needs to find a high-profile coach and back him with a handful of players ready to go into the starting XI. The new coach also has to get more out of Ashley Du Preez, Christian Saile and the other attackers.
