Sevilla vs Oviedo

Sevilla are 13th, Oviedo 19th, so the table leans to the hosts but only just. Sevilla’s home form has been flaky (over half their league games in Seville ended in defeat), while Oviedo have lost four of their last six away, so neither side screams reliability.

Most pundits are hedging their bets towards Sevilla due to their slightly better points return and Oviedo’s lack of clean sheets on the road, and the consensus is that we’re in for a tight, low-scoring contest.

Celta Vigo vs Athletic Bilbao

Celta are up to 10th and buzzing after that shock 2–0 away win over Real Madrid, but they now face an Athletic side sitting 7th and in very solid recent form. This looks like a proper arm-wrestle rather than a basketball scoreline, so I’m pencilling in a narrow away win with a pair of goals or less.

Levante vs Villarreal

It’s bottom of the table against third from the top. Levante are 20th and on a grim LLLLWL run, while Villarreal sit five points off top spot and come in on strong form under Marcelino. Levante still haven’t won at home in six attempts this season and have lost their last five in a row, so the visitors are huge favourites to take the points.

Villereal have scored two or more goals in each of their last seven La Liga matches, and Levante have conceded 28 in 15 league games, so I’m backing a pair-plus of goals for the visitors.

Alavés vs Real Madrid

Alavés are 11th and awkward enough at the Mendizorroza, but they’ve lost four of their last seven La Liga matches, while Madrid are riding high in second place with 36 points and 11 wins from 16 matches. The reality is that Xabi Alonso is under huge pressure after a 2–0 league defeat to Celta followed by a 2–1 home loss to Man City in the Champions League. Now is a great time to be hosting Real Madrid.

Real's record against Alavés is superb, winning nine and losing one of their last 10 matches against them, including five wins in a row at Alaves. The home side aren’t big scorers at the moment, so whether they win, lose or draw, I’m scratching in one goal or less for them on the night. Seems the only sensible thing to do.

Verdict

Spanish La Liga

Sevilla to take the points in a low-scoring affair with Oviedo, while Celta Vigo and Athletic Bilbao are in for a low-scoring battle.

Levante to take a loss from Villarreal, while Alaves will be holding thumbs that Real Madrid’s confidence remains low after back-to-back defeats.
