Real Sociedad vs Villarreal

Real Sociedad are starting to click again: they’ve just put together a run of five wins and two draws in their last seven in all competitions, including a 3–2 derby win over Athletic Club and a 3–1 victory at Osasuna, lifting them into mid-table with a solid (if unspectacular) record of 4–4–5 in La Liga.

Villarreal arrive in San Sebastián sitting 3rd after a strong November in the league – 4–0 over Rayo, 2–0 at Espanyol and 2–1 against Mallorca – but they’ve also taken a couple of bruises in Europe, losing to Pafos and being thrashed 4–0 by Dortmund. With La Liga momentum on both sides but Villarreal coming off that midweek hammering, this feels like a tight, high-quality game where Real Sociedad’s home form and growing confidence give them a slight edge, even if both teams scoring looks very likely.

Sevilla vs Betis

The derby finds Sevilla in a really awkward spot: they’ve lost heavily to Atlético (3–0), been beaten at home by Mallorca and Real Sociedad, and just saw a nine-year unbeaten run against Espanyol snapped in a 2–1 away defeat, leaving them stuck in mid-table and with patchy home form. By contrast, Betis are in 5th place, unbeaten in their Europa League group and come into the match on the back of a 2–1 win over Utrecht plus a solid 1–1 draw with Girona, despite some injury drama and player rotations.

Recent head-to-head stats lean heavily towards draws,  especially considering that Betis are unbeaten in nine matches on the road. Sevilla are stumbling through the season, while Betis seem to be growing in strength and confidence and look the calmer, more structured side. However, with Sevilla playing in front of an expectant home crowd, this match-up feels more like Betis will be looking to avoid defeat rather than going for gold from the starting gun.

Celta Vigo vs Espanyol

Celta’s season has swung from a long winless run to a mini-revival and back into choppy waters: they’ve beaten Levante and Dinamo Zagreb this month, but then lost 4–2 at home to Barcelona, before the international break. They came back to beat Alaves 1-0 away before losing 3–2 away to Ludogorets in midweek, underlining how dangerous but defensively fragile they are.

Espanyol, meanwhile, sit 6th with 21 points and have just reignited their own campaign by beating Sevilla 2–1 after back-to-back defeats in La Liga, pulling level with Betis in the table and showing they can grind out results even when not sparkling. With Celta so open and Espanyol carrying the slightly steadier form line, this has the feel of a lively contest where the visitors look good for at least a point, and maybe another narrow, efficient away win.

Girona vs Real Madrid

Girona have sold out the Estadi Montilivi for the visit of the league leaders, but they will be on the back foot from the kickoff as they are in the drop zone on goal difference: 18th with just 11 points, a 2-5-6 record, one of La Liga’s leakiest defences (25 conceded) and a growing injury crisis that has coach Míchel openly frustrated.

They have at least shown some fight lately with a 1–0 win over Alavés and a battling 1–1 draw at Betis, but now face a Real Madrid side top of the table with 32 points from 13 (10 wins, two draws, one defeat), fresh from a wild 4–3 comeback victory at Olympiacos and a late 2–2 escape at Elche. Real have only won one of their last four matches, scoring and conceding six.

The head-to-head is goal-heavy and tilted Madrid’s way, and although Girona’s crowd will make this a big occasion, it still feels like the sort of high-tempo, end-to-end game where Real’s individual quality in the final third tells in the end. Girona have won two and lost four of their last six against Real and considering their form a long shot stake and a prayer to Lady Luck could throw up some tasty odds, but the smart money is resting on Real. I’d close my eyes and back Girona to score first for good odds.

Verdict

Goals to flow between Real Sociedad and Villarreal, Sevilla and Betis to stumble to a draw.

Celta Vigo and Espanyol to share the points, while Girona are set to muscle hard at home against the odds to try to deny Real Madrid any points.
