Head to Head

Coventry have an 18-13 advantage against Sunderland in 49 meetings with 18 draws.

Sunderland Form

Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland ended the Championship season with a big downturn in form and lost their final five fixtures.

The Black Cats lost 1-0 at home against Swansea and 2-1 at Bristol City. Further defeats followed against Blackburn 1-0, Oxford 2-0 and QPR 1-0.

Sunderland recovered and produced a much-improved performance to beat Coventry 2-1 in the play-off semi-final. They had 1.16 XG and second-half goals from Wilson Isidor Eliezer Mayenda secured a first-leg advantage.

Sunderland Injuries

Forward Romaine Mundle and defender Aji Alese are injury doubts and could miss out.

Defender Niall Huggins and attacking trio Jayden Danns, Ahmed Abdullahi and Ian Poveda are unavailable due to injury.

Coventry Form

Coventry were in patchy Championship form before the play-offs. The Midlands team won three, lost two and drew once in their final six matches of the 2024/25 campaign.

Frank Lampard’s side lost their final two away games of the season, 3-1 at Plymouth and 1-0 at Luton. A 2-0 home win over Middlesbrough on the final day helped Coventry finish inside the top six.

The Sky Blues lost 2-1 at home against Sunderland in the play-off semi-final first leg and had 1.72 XG. Jack Rudoni cancelled out Sunderland’s opener before Coventry conceded a second in the 88th minute.

Coventry Injuries

Goalkeeper Oliver Dovin, midfielder Victor Torp and forward Norman Bassette are sidelined with injuries.

Verdict

Sunderland looked much more threatening in front of goal at Coventry in the semi-final first leg. The Sky Blues need to claw back into this clash and sticking with more goals is the best bet.
