Champions League Predictions, Quarter-final first leg


Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich


Real have won 10 of their last 14 matches but have uncharacteristically lost 3 of those matches. The Kings of Europe crushed Man City 5-1 over two legs in the Round of 16 and are displaying a passion for winning. This season they have won 21 of their 24 home matches, losing only to Getafe, Man City (in a Champions League group match) and Celta Vigo.

Bayern are unbeaten in their last 13 matches (11 wins) and have scored 42 goals to 14, so they are in mean form. Bayern travel well, winning 21 of their 25 away matches this season, with 1 draw and 3 defeats. Two of those defeats were in the Club World Cup before the season proper started.

This is a battle between two of football’s giants, and with home advantage I’m backing Real to win, noting that neither side have drawn more than a handful of matches this season. We should be well entertained with goals, and I’m backing 3-plus goals between the two sides. 

Sporting vs Arsenal


Arsenal went 14 matches unbeaten (11 wins) before their quadruple dreams were dashed with back-to-back defeats as they lost to Man City in the League Cup final before going out of the FA Cup away to Southampton. 

Arsenal have 4 huge games in the next 12 days that could see them knocked out of the Champions League and with their Premier League lead potentially cut to just 3 points. 

The Gunners have plenty of injury concerns as well as tired bodies and the weight of expectations seems to be weighing on them again. They are sure to pick themselves up after this setback to deny Sporting a home win. 

Sporting have won 13 of their last 16 matches and beat giant-killers Bodo/Glimt 8-0 on aggregate in their Round of 16 clash. Their path to the quarter-final has been relatively easy, with their only loss being a 3-1 away defeat to Bayern Munich. 

Sporting have won 18 of their 20 home matches, while Arsenal went 14 matches unbeaten (10 wins) on the road before losing to Southampton in the FA Cup. I don’t see Arsenal winning given the demands of their fixture list and their injury problems, but they should be strong enough to deny Sporting a victory. I’m backing a score-draw with Arsenal to clinch the second leg at home.
