Belgium vs Russia Preview & Tips

Belgium are magnificent going forward especially with Lukaku in form. Russia are backed to score but lose the match.

  • Belgium have won 19 of their last 23 matches (all competitions).
  • Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku has scored 20 goals in his last 18 international matches (all competitions).
  • Belgium have won 5 of their last 6 matches against Russia (all competitions).
  • Belgium have seen over 3.5 goals in their last 3 matches against Russia (all competitions).
  • Russia have seen BTTS in 4 of their last 5 matches (all competitions).
  • Russia have lost 3 of their last 4 matches (European Championship).

Head to Head

Belgium have a 5-0 advantage against Russia with two draws in seven matches.

They met in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, Belgium winning 3-1 at home and 4-1 in Russia.

Belgium Form

Belgium have won 19 of their last 23 matches.

Roberto Martínez’ side won two of their three World Cup qualifiers. The Red Devils beat Wales 3-1, drew 1-1 in the Czech Republic and beat Belarus 8-0 with six different goalscorers.

Belgium have played two friendlies to prepare for Euro 2020. They drew 1-1 against Greece before a 1-0 win against Croatia with Romelu Lukaku scoring the winner.

Belgium Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Thibaut Courtois, Simon Mignolet, Matz Sels
Defenders: Toby Alderweireld, Thomas Vermaelen, Dedryck Boyata, Jan Vertonghen, Thomas Meunier, Jason Denayer, Leander Dendoncker, Timothy Castagne
Midfielders: Axel Witsel, Kevin De Bruyne (vice-captain), Youri Tielemans, Yannick Carrasco, Thorgan Hazard, Hans Vanaken, Nacer Chadli, Dennis Praet
Forwards: Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard (captain), Dries Mertens, Christian Benteke, Michy Batshuayi, Leandro Trossard, Jérémy Doku

There is an abundance of experience and talent in the Belgium squad.

Axel Witsel hasn’t played in a long time after suffering a serious Achilles injury and is unlikely to start.

Eden Hazard hasn’t played much for Real Madrid this season and could start on the bench.

Romelu Lukaku has scored 60 goals in 93 internationals and will be the main man up front.

Russia Form

Russia’s form has tailed off since September 2020. They have won only three of their last 11 matches.

Stanislav Cherchesov’s side went without a win in six matches before the World Cup qualifiers. They got off to a good start with a 3-1 win in Malta and 2-1 win against Slovenia before losing 2-1 in Slovakia.

Russia played two warm up friendlies, a 1-1 draw against Poland followed by a 1-0 win against Bulgaria with Aleksandr Sobolev scoring the winner.

Russia Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Anton Shunin, Yury Dyupin, Matvei Safonov
Defenders: Mário Fernandes, Igor Diveyev, Vyacheslav Karavayev, Andrei Semyonov, Fyodor Kudryashov, Georgi Dzhikiya, Yuri Zhirkov
Midfielders: Denis Cheryshev, Magomed Ozdoyev, Dmitri Barinov, Roman Zobnin, Aleksei Miranchuk, Aleksandr Golovin, Rifat Zhemaletdinov, Aleksei Ionov, Daniil Fomin, Daler Kuzyayev, Andrei Mostovoy, Denis Makarov, Maksim Mukhin
Forwards: Aleksandr Sobolev, Anton Zabolotny, Artem Dzyuba (captain)

There is inexperience in the goalkeeper ranks for Russia.

Artem Dzyuba leads the way up front with the Zenit Saint Petersburg striker scoring 29 goals in 52 internationals.

Verdict

Russia have home advantage and can score, but that’s unlikely to help them against a far superior Belgium side.

Romelu Lukaku is expected to score for the Red Devils after scoring 20 goals in his last 18 internationals.
