Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Predictions - Short to hit the Thunder with fourth straight loss

Editor
Last updated: 05 Jan 2026

The Adelaide Strikers are predicted to emerge victorious, with Matthew Short being highlighted as a potential key player, likely to top-score in the match. The odds are set at 3.6 for the Strikers’ win. However, David Warner is also in focus as a formidable opponent, with an opportunity to score 30-plus runs. The odds for Warner achieving this feat stand at 2.0. This sets the stage for an exciting match with key performances expected to dictate the outcome.

Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Predictions

The Strikers have played some good cricket but have been frustrated by their results. They should be too strong for the Thunder, whose batting has struggled as they have lost five of their six matches.

  • Adelaide Strikers’ Matthew Short (184 runs, ave 36.80) is 6th in the Big Bash runs list.
  • Adelaide Strikers’ Liam Scott has scored 51, 25 & 33 in his last 5 innings.
  • Sydney Thunder’s David Warner hit 98 of his 130* vs the Hurricanes in boundaries.
  • Sydney Thunder’s Matthew Gilkes has scored 76, 24 & 33 in his last 4 innings.

Head-to-Head

The Strikers have won four and lost one of their last five Big Bash matches against the Thunder, although the latter won their most recent clash.

Adelaide Strikers Form

After picking up their second win of the season, the Strikers were pegged back by the Scorchers, losing by 33 runs.

Matthew Short is the Strikers’ top run-scorer. Chris Lynn scored 22 and 79* in back-to-back innings against the Heat, but he hasn’t scored above five in his other three innings. Liam Scott has scored 51, 25, 7* and 33 in his five innings, as well as picking up 2/12 in the win over the Heat.

Lloyd Pope is the Strikers’ leading wicket-taker, snaring eight victims while conceding 7.94 runs to the over. He picked up 4/23 in their defeat against the Scorchers. Luke Wood, Jamie Overton and Hasan Ali have each taken six wickets this season.

Sydney Thunder Form

The Thunder slipped to their third defeat on the bounce when they lost to the Hurricanes by six wickets, despite posting 205/4 off their 20 overs.

David Warner’s poor run of form ended with his brutal century against the Hurricanes, albeit in a losing cause. Matthew Gilkes and Sam Billings have been the most consistent of the Thunder batters. Talented Sam Konstas scored 63 against the Heat but hasn’t passed 28 in his other five innings.

Daniel Sams has been a man on fire in the last four games, picking up 2/25, 4/51 and 3/36. Shadab Khan has kept things tight this season, along with taking 4/24 against the Heat and scoring 34, 41 and 25 in his four innings.

Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Team News

Seamer Hassan Ali has been brought back into the side and will replace new signing Tabraiz Shamsi, despite the South African starring on his debut against the Scorchers, picking up of 3/30.

England allrounder David Willey is in line for his Big Bash debut for the Thunder after four seasons with the Scorchers. Willey is an International Replacement Player filling in for Shadab Khan, who is in the Pakistan squad to take on Sri Lanka in their T20I series.

“David Willey is an awesome allrounder, with the ball, bat and in the field. Very much the same to Shadab except he bowls left arm pace instead of right arm spin, so looking forward to running out with him,” said team-mate Chris Green.
