Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Stars Predictions - Webster to power the Hurricanes through the playoffs

Editor
Last updated: 1 hour ago

The Hobart Hurricanes are poised for victory against the Melbourne Stars despite narrowly missing out on topping the table. With players like Beau Webster in fine form, alongside Ben McDermott's consistent runs, the Hurricanes display strength. Conversely, the Stars boast Sam Harper's impressive batting and a strong bowling lineup, featuring Haris Rauf leading wickets. The Hurricanes have won two of their last five meetings against the Stars, making them slight favorites. The prediction leans towards a Hurricanes win, with Webster likely to make a significant impact.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Stars Predictions

After a brilliant season, the defending champs the Hurricanes missed out for the second season in a row on finishing top of the table after losing their last match to the Heat. The Stars got off to a great start to their season before suffering a brief dip in form, but they recoverd to squeeze into the playoffs. I’m backing the Hurricanes in the Knockout as they’ve been consistently good all season.

  • Hobart Hurricanes’ Beau Webster scored 51 off 43 balls against the Heat.
  • Hobart Hurricanes’ Ben McDermott has scored 38, 69, 49* & 59 in his 9 innings.
  • Melbourne Stars’ Sam Harper (371 runs, ave 61.83) is 3rd on the Big Bash runs list.
  • Melbourne Stars’ Marcus Stoinis has scored 33, 23* & 55 in his last 3 innings.

Head-to-Head

The Hurricanes have won two and lost three of their last five Big Bash matches against the Stars.

Hobart Hurricanes Form

The Hurricanes missed out on three wins in a row when they lost to the Heat by just three runs.

Nikhil Chaudhary is the Hurricanes’ leading runs-scorer (279 runs, S/R 151.63) and has been chipping in consistently in his last six innings (34, 19, 31, 289*, 23 and 16) without pushing on to a big score. Ben McDermott is just nine runs behind Chaudhary and hit three sixes in his 36-ball 59 against the Heat.

Riley Meredith (3/40), Nathan Ellis (2/30) and Rishad Hossain (2/27) did their best to limit the Heat in their final match but it wasn’t enough to save the match. Ellis is  joint 8th on the Big Bash runs list with 14 wickets, with Hossain joint 10th with 13 wickets.

Melbourne Stars Form

After winning two matches on the bounce the Stars lost to the Scorchers by six wickets in their final group match.

Sam Harper’s runs have kept his side in sight of the playoff places, and his 371 runs have come at a strike-rate of 155.23. Marcus Stoinis is his side’s second-highest run-scorer, with 264 at an average of 66.00. He’s also 8th on the wickets list, taking 2/20, 3/33 and 2/8 in his last four matches.

The Stars’ season has been driven by their bowlers, with four of their attack sitting in the top eight wicket-takers for the season. Haris Rauf is the joint top wicket-taker with 18 wickets (econ 7.96), taking 2/44, 2/31 and 3/23 in his last five matches. Peter Siddle has taken 16 wickets, Tom Curran 15 and Marcus Stoinis 14.
