Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder Predictions

Defending champions Hobart Hurricanes take on the Sydney Thunder in a rerun of last season’s final. The Hurricanes topped the table last season, with two wins more than the Thunder, but the Hurricanes’ win was all on the shoulders of Mitchell Owen’s astonishing 42-ball 108, while the Thunder produced a better all-round performance.

  • Sydney Thunder’s Sam Konstas has scored 43, 36, 116 & 53 in his last 5 innings.
  • Sydney Thunder’s David Warner has a strike-rate of 142.57 in T20Is (3277 runs).
  • Hobart Hurricanes’ Matthew Wade has scored 2817 runs (ave 30.61, S/R 140.77) in 104 BBL innings.
  • Hobart Hurricanes’ Nikhil Chaudhary has scored 38, 19*, 163 & 42 in his last 5 innings.

Head-to-Head

The Hurricanes have won four of their last five matches against the Thunder, with the other match rained-off.

Hobart Hurricanes Form

Mitch Owen won the final for his side last season with an amazing innings of 108 off 42 balls that included 11 sixes and six fours. His recent form has been poor, with under 100 runs in seven innings, but he has been bowling tight and picking up some wickets.

Matthew Wade (40, 105 and 46*) has been in form with the bat in white-ball, as have Ben McDermott (44 and 43*) and Tim David (57*, 98* and 60). Tim Ward has been blasting the red ball (42, 52 119 and 66) and adds serious firepower further up the order, while Nikhil Chaudhary will be good for runs and tight overs.

Rishad Hossain adds wonderful variety with his legbreak googlies, taking 3/43, 1/34 and 3/21 in his last three T20Is. Rehan Ahmed will add spin backup in a squad attack that includes Riley Meredith, Billy Stanlake, Chris Jordan and Nathan Ellis.

Sydney Thunder Form

The Thunder have a strong side with plenty of international experience, which is why I’m backing them to get off to a flying start.

Former Australia captain David Warner is the key man, although his fast-scoring wizardry has dwindled in recent years. They have plenty of batting reserves in Daniel Sams and England’s Sam Billings. Cameron Bancroft will be a powerful presence upfront and is likely to open with the maverick young Sam Konstas.

Reece Topley will lead the attack with his pace bowling, with plenty of spin in the shape of Chris Green and Nathan McAndrew, both of whom are key to containing the opposition in the middle overs.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder Team News & Squads

David Warner has hinted at a key strategic change in the Thunder’s line-up, with the expected Warner/Sam Konstas opening partnership not being a certainty for the season. Warner suggested he might move into the middle-order to upset the bowlers by having a left-hander to take advantage of the middle overs.

"That's more for a match-up and strategic point of view. We don't have that left-hander in the middle-order that we've been looking for. It's a conversation we're having at the moment," said Warner, who expressed confidence in Konstas’ ability to have an impact at the top of the order for the Thunder.

"The best form of currency is runs and he's doing that at the moment. When you do get thrown in the limelight, it can be a deer in the headlights. You can get overwhelmed and sucked into the hype around everything. But he has great support around him that will keep him level-headed. You just have to allow him to keep playing his natural game."

Hobart Hurricanes possible XI: Mitch Owen, Tim Ward, Nikhil Chaudhary, Ben McDermott, Tim David, Matthew Wade (w), Rehan Ahmed, Chris Jordan, Nathan Ellis (c), Riley Meredith, Rishad Hossain

Sydney Thunder possible XI: David Warner (c), Sam Konstas, Cameron Bancroft, Ollie Davies, Sam Billings (w), Chris Green, Nathan McAndrew, Ryan Hadley, Reece Topley, Tanveer Sangha, Shadab Khan/ Tom Andrews.

Verdict

I am backing Sydney Thunder to win. I am also backing Sam Konstas to top score for Sydney Thunder.

Matthew Wade is a good bet to top score for the Hobart Hurricanes.
